*re Examine
So Far In This Course, We Have Seen That We
Should Organise What We Write Into Paragraphs.
Each Paragraph Has A Topic, Or Subject, And
Usually Has A Topic Sentence. The Other
Sentences In The Paragraph Are Support
Sentences. They Support The Topic Sentence,
Either By Explaining What It Means , Or Adding To
Its Meaning, Or By Giving Examples,
*identify The Topic.
Let Me Give One Topic For Exam,
TRADITIONAL MEDICINE OR WITCHCRAFT?
* Paragraph 1
In The Past, Many Educated People Regarded
Traditional Medicine As Superstition. It Was
Considered That It Had No Basis In Modern Medical
Science.
Herbal Medicines Were Thought To Be Either
Useless, Or Even Actually Harmful. Practitioners Of
Traditional Medicine Were Called Witchdoctors, Or
Quacks, And Western-trained Doctors Usually Saw
Them As A Possible Threat To The Well-being Of
Their Patients
PRACTISE ANSWERING QUESTION

How The Support Sentences Explain, Or Develop,
The Ideas In The Topic Sentence.
Paragraph 2
However, This Is Gradually Changing. While It Is
Recognised That There Are Frauds, Quacks, Among
Traditional Medicine Men, It Is Now Being
Increasingly Accepted That Traditional Medicine
Has An Important Role To Play In Modern African
Society. Modern Research Into Traditional Methods
Has Shown That They Can Sometimes Achieve
Amazing Results. For Example, Traditional Medicine
Has Sometimes Been Extraordinarily Successful In
Solving Problems Of Female Infertility. As A Result
Of Such Research, There Is A Growing Interest
Among Progressive African Countries In Examining
The Part That Traditional Medicine Can Play Within
A Modern Health Service.

3. USING CONNECTING PHRASES
When We Write, We Can Often Use Short Phrases At The Beginning Of
Sentences To Help Signal Our Meaning. Look At The
Phrase In The Past At The Beginning Of Paragraph
1. This Phrase Helps To Signal To Us That The
Sentence That Follows_indeed, The Whole
Paragraph, Is About The Past. This Helps Us To
Understand More Clearly. There Are Many Phrases
Like This Which Help Us To Understand.
What Is The First Word In Paragraph 2? This Word
Tells Us That What Is In The Second Paragraph
Contrasts With, Or Is The Opposite Of, The First
Paragraph. So We Can Expect The Second
Paragraph To Give A Different View_ As It Does:
However This Situation Is Gradually Changing.
Later In The Paragraph We Have Two More
Phrases: For Example And As A Result Of.
4. OPINION
Imagine That You Wrote The Two Paragraphs On
Traditional Medicine Above. So Far, You Have Done
Little Except Describe Attitudes In The Past, And
The Way These Attitudes Are Beginning To Change.
You Have Not Yet Stated Your Own Point Of View.
Always Practise Forming A Good Opinion.
Tips for being a good writer
There are six things you can do to be a better
(ahem, more effective ) writer. The following is
what I recommend (click the links to read
articles on each subject):
1. Read. Good writers read. It’s that simple.
Words are the lifeblood of great writing.
There’s no way to get good without lots of
valuable input.
2. Get an editor. A good writer recognizes he
needs help. He can’t do this on his own
(neither can you). You need to get someone
to critique your writing, someone you trust.
I suggest a peer editor for starters.
3. Capture ideas. A good writer is constantly
gathering creative input. Ideas are the
inspiration for artists and writers. You need
to have a system for collecting them. A
great tool to help you do this is Evernote.
4. Write every day. This cannot be
overlooked. It’s essential. You can’t get
good without practice. Even if only for a
few minutes, you need to write every single
day .
5. Rewrite. An essential part of writing is
rewriting,
distilling the fluff down to some core
content that will actually make a difference.
This is hard, but important. Stephen King
calls this “killing your darlings.” And for
good reason. It ain’t pretty. But it’s
necessary.
6. Get inspired. Hard to explain, but there’s a
part of the writing process that is
mysterious. You can’t take full
responsibility for what you create. A good
writer knows how to avail herself to the
Muse. She knows inspiration is like
breathing for the creative spirit.
