Love often has an expiration date in Hollywood, and as it has in years past , this sad fact held true in 2018. From stars who dated for just a few months to couples who’d been married for more than a decade, no one is safe from heartbreak — even the rich and famous.
Here are all the celebrity pairings that called it quits in 2018.
Nicki Minaj and Nas
When most people were still riding the high that comes with each new year, rap superstar Nicki Minaj and hip hop artist Nas (full name Nasir Jones) were heading into 2018 as newly single celebs.
In early January, news broke that the couple, who had dated for a total of seven months, had ended things. According to TMZ, Nas and Minaj’s distance contributed to their split. They’d reportedly been living in two different cities.
A source confirmed as much to Us Weekly. “They were never in the same place at the same time, so it was hard to move their relationship forward,” the insider claimed. Fortunately, there’s reportedly no bad blood between these two. “They still remain friends,” the source said.
Anne Heche and James Tupper
Despite being together for more than a decade, actress Anne Heche and her longtime partner, Big Little Lies ‘ James Tupper, broke up in January. At the time, Heche filed paperwork to establish custody and child support for their son, Atlas, who they welcomed in 2009 (via Us Weekly ). The former couple had also cared for Heche’s son from a previous marriage, Homer, during their time together.
In a joint statement obtained by People , Heche and Tupper said they’d “shared a great life together and have many wonderful memories,” but apparently that wasn’t enough. The statement noted, “Relationships change and grow; we’re taking time for that. We care very much for each other and plan to continue raising our two beautiful boys in love and harmony.”
Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff
No one saw this breakup coming: Girls creator and star Lena Dunham and Bleachers’ musician Jack Antonoff ended their relationship after logging more than five years together as a couple.
According to an E! News insider, the split was mutual. “Jack and Lena were growing apart and it just made sense for them to end their relationship where it was,” the source said. “They want the best for each other no matter what. They are both moving on.”
While Dunham and Antonoff’s separation may have been unexpected, fans can rest easy knowing that neither celeb harbors any ill toward the other. Opening up about why she’ll continue wearing a ring Antonoff gave her, Dunham told her Instagram followers (via Entertainment Tonight), “I’ll always wear [it] because love is a really cool, eternal powerful, eternal thing.” She added, “It doesn’t have to be defined the way we, in Western culture, define it — as beginning and ends. Things can be, ‘You’re a drop of water and you reenter the ocean.'”
How very zen.
Brandi Glanville and Donald Friese
These two are over. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Brandi Glanville announced her breakup with her boyfriend of one year, Donald “DJ” Friese — and, apparently, social media was to blame.
Taking to Twitter to share the news, Glanville
wrote, “Social media is ruining romance! It ruined mine.” She later added, “Is official I’m SINGLE! He is all urs IG hoes! He is lovely so be nice.” Soon after, Glanville tweeted, “When IG is the real true love of your life I think you really need to check yourself and change your focus.” Yikes.
She may have called Friese “lovely,” but it doesn’t sound like things ended well for these former flames.
Alex Pall and Tori Woodward
The Chainsmokers’ Alex Pall and his longtime flame, Tori Woodward, ended their relationship in January — after the famous DJ was reportedly caught cheating on security footage.
As reported by People, Woodward shared alleged proof of Pall’s infidelity on her Instagram Stories — the footage appeared to show Pall kissing another woman. “Alex is disgusting. Men are trash. Don’t ever forget it,” Woodward wrote in the caption of one post. She added, “They’ll look you in the eyes and tell you they love you. Then destroy you without a second thought.”
Following Woodward’s public shaming, Pall told TMZ that he’d been feeling “miserable.” He also told the gossip rag’s paparazzo that his ex-girlfriend “deserves the best,” adding, “I wish nothing but the best for her. She deserves a better guy than me.”
Jesse Williams and Minka Kelly
Following his headline-making divorce from wife Aryn Drake-Lee, Jesse Williams got together with fellow Hollywood star Minka Kelly. However, this couple didn’t last long. After enduring rumors that they’d had an affair during his marriage to Drake-Lee, with whom Williams shares two children, the pair eventually ended its romance. News of Williams and Kelly’s demise broke in January, according to Entertainment Tonight.
Though their relationship had reportedly been rock solid as of October 2017, the Grey’s Anatomy star and the Friday Night Lights actress, who are thought to have started dating in July 2017, apparently went several months without seeing each other before their breakup hit the press, a source told
Entertainment Tonight .
Scott Phillips and Julie Bowen
Modern Family star Julie Bowen and her husband of 13 years, Scott Phillips, called it quits in early February, reported People. These two wed in September 2004 and share three children together: sons Oliver, John, and Gustav. They’d allegedly been “living separate lives” since late 2017, reported E! News.
In September 2016, Bowen actually joked about her marriage to Us Weekly, attributing her and Phillips’ lasting romance to, well, laziness. “We watch all these people get married and split up and go, ‘Wait, did they get married after us or before us?'” Bowen said at the time. “We outlast all these people. The answer: We’re too tired to do anything else!”
It looks like Bowen and Phillips finally found the energy to reconsider their relationship.
Michael Sheen and Sarah Silverman
Comedian Sarah Silverman and her actor boyfriend, Masters of Sex star Michael Sheen, said their goodbyes to one another over the 2017 holiday season, but they didn’t go public with their big breakup until early February 2018.
Silverman announced the sad news on Twitter, revealing that distance had caused a rift in their relationship. “The great @michaelsheen & I consciously uncoupled over Christmas,” Silverman said, referencing Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s infamous post-breakup statement . “I mean, not ‘over Christmas’ — like that wasn’t the fight that ended it. No fight. We just live in different countries & it got hard.” She added, “Felt we should just tell y’all so u stop askin, ‘How’s Michael/How’s Sarah?'”
Well, that clears everything up then, doesn’t it?
Daniel Christopher Allison and Monica Potter
News that Parenthood star Monica Potter and her husband, orthopedic surgeon Daniel Christopher Allison, ended their marriage circulated in early February. According to E! News, Potter filed for divorce from Allison a month earlier, citing irreconcilable differences as the cause of their breakup. While the actress has two sons from a previous relationship, she and Allison only share daughter Molly Brigid together. They’d been married for more than ten years.
Potter is “very sad and heartbroken,” a source told People. “But they are focused on co-parenting their daughter.”
Bristol Palin and Dakota Meyer
Musicians and actors aren’t the only ones who broke up with loved ones in 2018. Bristol Palin, reality TV star and daughter of former United States Vice President nominee Sarah Palin, made headlines in February for her split from husband Dakota Meyer. Bristol and her now-ex, who share daughters Sailor Grace and Atlee Bay, wed in 2016 (via People).
According to TMZ, Meyer filed for divorce from Bristol in late January. At the time, Bristol and Meyer had reportedly stopped following each other on Instagram and were no longer living together in the same house.
USA Today noted that Meyer listed “discord or conflict of personalities” which “destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationship and prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation” as the reason for his separation from Bristol.
Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston
Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston crushed fans’ hearts when they’d announced their separation in February. After getting engaged in August 2012 and tying the knot three years later, the Leftovers actor and the Friends starlet seemed like they’d be together forever — or, at the very least, more than just a couple of years. Alas, after little more than two years of marriage, the pair called it quits, reported E! News.
In a joint statement to The Associated Press, Aniston and Theroux addressed their split head-on: “This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.” Aniston and Theroux also noted that they were “determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another,” despite their breakup.
Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Dane
Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Dane were married for well more than a decade, but all that shared history apparently couldn’t secure their future. As reported by USA Today , Gayheart filed for divorce from the Grey’s Anatomy star just two days after Valentine’s Day, citing irreconcilable differences. In a joint statement, the couple announced its separation: “After 14 years together we have decided that ending our marriage is the best decision for our family.”
Gayheart and Dane, who share daughters Billie and Georgia, said in the statement: “We will continue our friendship and work as a team to co-parent our two beautiful girls as they are the most important thing in the world to us. We kindly ask that you respect our privacy during this time as we navigate the next phase of our lives.”
Duane Martin and Tisha Campbell-Martin
The Martin actress took steps toward becoming a legally single woman once again, filing for divorce from her husband of 20 years, Duane Martin, in February.
In a statement obtained by People, Tisha Campbell-Martin said, “After 27 years of being together and two amazing children, it pains me to announce that I’ve filed for divorce.” She added, “It’s an emotional time and I graciously ask for privacy for me, our children and the rest of our family.”
According to court docs obtained by People, Campbell-Martin and Martin, who share sons Xen and Ezekiel, reportedly separated in December 2016. The actress listed irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split.
Claire Foy and Stephen Campbell Moore
Claire Foy, star of Netflix’s The Crown series, called it quits with her husband, actor Stephen Campbell Moore, after four years of marriage.
“We can confirm that we have separated and have been for some time,” the pair revealed in a joint statement (via E! News). “We do, however, continue as great friends with the utmost respect for one another. We ask for our privacy during this time.”
A source told The Sun that Foy and Campbell Moore’s split reportedly came as a “shock” to their friends, but, fortunately, the former flames are allegedly committed to being “civilized.”
Foy and Campbell Moore share one child together, daughter Ivy Rose.
Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump
On March 15, 2018, Vanessa Trump filed for divorce from husband Donald Trump Jr. in Manhattan Supreme Court. The couple announced its separation in a statement (via Page Six). “After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways,” the statement read. “We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time.”
Rumors abound about why their union crumbled, but some sources claim Don Jr.’s busy schedule — he runs the Trump Organization and loves to travel the world on big game hunts — played a role. Vanessa was also reportedly uncomfortable with the newfound attention her family has received since her father-in-law, President Donald Trump, took office in 2017. As some may recall, Vanessa was hospitalized after she and Donald Jr. received a letter containing a
suspicious white powder . The substance was later determined to be cornstarch.
Alicia Silverstone and Christopher Jarecki
Clueless star Alicia Silverstone called it quits from her husband, punk rocker Christopher Jarecki, in February. In a statement obtained by E! News, Silverstone’s rep confirmed the celeb couple’s split, saying, “They still deeply love and respect each other and remain very close friends but have mutually decided to separate after being together for 20 years.” The couple plan to co-parent their son, Bear Blue Jarecki.
Silverstone started dating the lead singer of S.T.U.N. in 1997. The two married in Lake Tahoe, Calif. in 2005. Silverstone and Jarecki then welcomed their child together on May 5, 2011 (via Entertainment Tonight ).
Silverstone, author of The Kind Diet, and Jaracki have kept quiet about their breakup, as had always been their M.O. when it came to details about their private life. Maybe Silverstone will share more with the public now that she’s single? Yeah, probably not …
Kimberly Perry and J.P. Arencibia
The Band Perry singer Kimberly Perry announced that she and her former professional baseball player husband, J.P. Arencibia, were going their separate ways in early March. According to People, the country music crooner filed for divorce from Arencibia in Greeneville, Tenn., citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their separation.
Perry and Arencibia started dating back in 2012, and in October 2013, he proposed to the ” If I Die Young ” singer. They got hitched in June 2014.
Perry later confirmed that she and Arencibia were indeed breaking up. “Yes it’s true, my marriage has come to an end,” she shared on Instagram in a post that has since been deleted. “I know that beauty will come from these ashes and, as always, I want to thank you all for your love and support. I’ll be in touch soon.”
Arencibia also appeared to post about their breakup, sharing lyrics from Bob Marley’s song “Three Little Birds.” The image read, “Don’t worry about a thing ’cause every little thing is gonna be all right.” In the caption, he wrote, “All good. Half full mentality.”
We’ll take that as a sign that Perry and Arencibia’s marriage ended on good terms.
Jim Belushi and Jennifer Sloan
Jim Belushi and movie industry professional Jennifer Sloan added their names to the list of celeb couples who called it quits in 2018. According to The Blast , Sloan filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court on March 5, listing irreconcilable differences, requesting joint legal custody of their children, and requesting spousal support.
In a move that we hope was purely accidental, Sloan’s divorce paperwork was filed on the 36-year anniversary of the death of her husband’s brother, actor John Belushi , who passed away after suffering a drug overdose in 1982 when he was just 33 years old.
Prior to their split, Jim and Sloan were together for nearly 20 years, having wed May 2, 1998. They share two children together, daughter Jamison and son Jared. Jim’s divorce from Sloan marks the end of his third marriage. He was previously married to Sandra Davenport from 1980 to 1988, with whom he shares an adult son named Robert James Belushi, and to actress Marjorie Bransfield from 1990 to 1992, reported Us Weekly.
Usher and Grace Miguel
The ” OMG ” singer and his longtime love have called it quits. Usher, whose full name is Usher Raymond IV, and his wife, music executive Grace Miguel, announced their split in March. “After much thought and consideration we have mutually decided to separate as a couple,” the pair said in a joint statement obtained by Us Weekly. “We remain deeply connected, loving friends who will continue supporting each other through the next phases of our lives. The enormous amount of love and respect that we have for each other will only increase as we move forward.” A source told Us Weekly the duo had split months ago.
Usher and Miguel started dating in 2009, got engaged in January 2015, and eloped in September of that year.
Prior to their divorce announcement, Usher and Miguel had weathered disturbing accusations made by multiple women and one man who all accused the singer of knowingly exposing them to herpes. According to TMZ, Usher has denied all of the allegations.
Angela Rye and Common
Hip-hop artist Common and CNN political commentator and activist Angela Rye broke up after dating since the summer of 2017. Rye confirmed the split to Page Six TV, saying, “We have and will always be friends. He is an amazing human being, and I’m a much better person because he’s a part of my life.” She added, “May we all keep loving and living.”
Page Six noted that the musician-turned-actor, whose real name is Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr., had appeared solo at both the 2018 Oscars and the Toast to the Arts event that he hosted with the Ayars Agency prior to their breakup news.
According to TMZ, Rye had been receiving death threats since she began dating Common. The LAPD’s Threat Management division reportedly investigated the matter.
Common had previously opened up about his affectino for Rye in September 2017, noting that they had a “definite connection.” Speaking on the SiriusXM radio show
Bevelations (via E! News), he said, “She’s a wonderful woman. I will just say, I am dating. I’m happy right now — and she is an incredible human being.”
Similarly, Rye’s had only nice things to say about her former flame. “From meeting Common I’ve definitely become a better human being,” she told Vanity Fair, “and for that I’m grateful.”
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid
After dating for more than two years, former One Direction singer Zayn Malik and model Gigi Hadid have ended their romance — at least for now. According to The Sun , Malik and Hadid’s relationship became strained due to “crazy work schedules.”
On March 13, Malik shared a text photo on Twitter, confirming his breakup with Hadid to his millions of social media followers. “Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend. She has such an incredible soul,” the post read. “I’m grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all.”
Likewise, Hadid also shared the news with her fans. “Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years .. not only in the relationship, but in life in general,” she wrote. “I’m forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared.” Hadid added that she wanted “nothing but the best” for her ex and that she will “continue to support him as a friend that [she has] immense respect and love for.”
Amber Rose and 21 Savage
Kanye West’s famous ex has called it quits with another member of the rap music scene. A source told People magazine that Amber Rose and 21 Savage (real name Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph) ended their relationship after dating for almost two years. “They are definitely off,” the insider revealed. “They are not together.”
Rose confirmed the split during an interview on the radio show Big Boy’s Neighborhood . “To be in a relationship is difficult, to be famous and in a relationship is even more difficult … and then you end up arguing about things that you usually wouldn’t argue about as a normal person,” she said. Rose added that she was still in love with Savage, stating, “I love him … I miss him, I think about him every day.” She added, “I can’t say that I’m single because … My heart is still with him.”
So is there a chance Rose and Savage, who she’d previously bought a $50,000 promise ring for, will reconcile? According to Rose, it is possible. She told Big Boy’s Neighborhood , “Hopefully, we can work it out but if we can’t — the love is still there.”
Anderson Cooper and Benjamin Maisani
Journalism’s famous silver fox is apparently back on the market — or, at least, he was for a hot minute. The Daily Mail reported that Anderson Cooper and longtime boyfriend, nightclub owner Benjamin Maisani, have called it quits. The CNN anchor’s rep issued a statement that said, “Benjamin and I separated as boyfriends some time ago. We are still family to each other, and love each other very much.” He added, “We remain the best of friends, and will continue to share much of our lives together.” According to Us Weekly, Cooper and Maisani dated for nine years.
But don’t feel too bad for the journalist because, according to the Daily Mail , Cooper has already started dating a doctor named Victor Lopez. The pair may have even been together for prior to the split — Lopez shared social media posts of himself with Cooper as early as December 2017.
Jessica Andrea and Logic
Rapper Logic and singer Jessica Andrea decided to end their marriage in March after two years together. According to TMZ, Logic, whose real name is Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, told Andrea that he was not as happy married to her as he was when he was single. Ouch .
Sources told the gossip rag that Logic grew distant from Andrea after his career took off following the release of his song “1-800-273-8255 ” in April 2017. Andrea was reportedly caught off guard by the change of heart.
The couple later confirmed their split in a joint statement. “After two years of marriage, we have come to the loving conclusion that we are much better as friends,” the statement said (via People). “As entertainers, we have made every aspect of our lives public, yet we would appreciate your respect and privacy on this issue.”
“It’s very simple: it just didn’t work out. There is no anger involved,” the couple said. “No fighting, no cheating, no nothing. We love each other and will continue to support each other for the rest of our lives.”
Jenny Slate and Chris Evans
In a profile published on March 22, The New York Times broke the news that Captain America star Chris Evans and comedic actress Jenny Slate had split up … again. Specifically, the article’s writer noted that “their on-again, off-again relationship, beloved by the internet, recently ended.”
Evans and Slate first gotten together after starring in the 2017 film Gifted. In a March 2017 interview with Vulture (following their first breakup,) she recalled the beginning of their relationship. “I remember him saying to me, ‘You’re going to be one of my closest friends.’ I was just like, ‘Man, I f***ing hope this isn’t a lie, because I’m going to be devastated if this guy isn’t my friend.'” She noted, “Chris is truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, to the point where sometimes I would look at him and it would kind of break my heart.”
Evans has gushed about his ex-girlfriend in the past as well, calling her his “favorite human.” He told People in March 2017, “She’s so vulnerable, so honest, so interested in other people more than herself, she’s incredibly compassionate, there’s just nothing to not love about her.”
After exchanging some flirty messages via Twitter in October 2017, the pair appeared to have gotten back together by November of that year. We’re holding out hope that this celeb couple will reconcile in the future. It seems totally possible — after all, they’ve done it once before!
Alessandra Ambrosio and Jamie Mazur
News that Victoria’s Secret Angel Alessandra Ambrosio and her longtime beau, businessman Jamie Mazur, ended their relationship following a ten-year engagement broke in March. A source told Us Weekly at the time, “They [have] been trying to keep their split on the down low, but Alessandra has been out and about ready to mingle and hasn’t been taking Jamie to anything.”
As noted by the magazine, Ambrosio and Mazur hadn’t been spotted together in public for quite some time before their breakup made headlines. They also hadn’t posted photos of one another on social media since Christmas 2017.
Ambrosio had previously opened up about her engagement to Mazur to Cosmopolitan in 2016. “At some point I will marry, but it’s not on the top of my list,” she said (via the Daily Mail). “If I have been engaged to him for eight years, then it’s not my priority. I have a lot of things going on, and I haven’t got married because I’m so busy.”
The now-former couple share two children, daughter Anja Louise and son Noah Phoenix.
Tiffany Trump and Ross Mechanic
The youngest daughter of the president of the United States, Tiffany Trump , split up with her boyfriend, Ross Mechanic , in 2017. The breakup reportedly coincided with her endeavors at Georgetown Law School, but news of their demise didn’t go public until the following year.
Though the couple had reportedly been “very happy” together the previous summer, Trump and Mechanic may have experienced tension as she worried about moving from New York to Washington, D.C. for school, according to
People magazine. A source told Us Weekly that the pair’s breakup was “cordial,” noting that Trump is “taking law school seriously.”
Trump and Mechanic met when they were both undergraduate students at the University of Pennsylvania. According to their past Instagram posts, the college sweethearts appear to have started dating as early as October 2015 (via Heavy ).
Mechanic has apparently moved on. The Daily Mail reported that he posted a photo of himself kissing a brunette on his Instagram Story.
Danny Amendola and Olivia Culpo
The NFL star and the former Miss Universe pageant winner — she snagged the crown back in 2012 — headed for Splitsville in 2018. A source told Us Weekly in March that Olivia Culpo and Danny Amendola had “definitely broke up,” explaining that distance was to blame for the separation (Amendola was signed to the Miami Dolphins that same month.) The insider also noted that Amendola was allegedly unhappy with Culpo after she posed nude for a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
Culpo later confirmed the breakup to Access Hollywood (via Us Weekly ): “We are broken up and it’s just so fresh for me. I don’t feel comfortable talking about it.” She added, “Everyone goes through breakups in life. Everybody has their own way of handling it and it’s something that I definitely am not going to get into at this moment. But I am sure everyone can relate to heartbreak.”
The two started dating in 2016 after bumping into each other in California — specifically “on the corner of Hollywood and Vine,” as Amendola once told the Providence Journal .
Chrissy Metz and Josh Stancil
This is Us star Chrissy Metz and her camera grip boyfriend Josh Stancil ended their relationship sometime in 2018. The actress revealed that they broke up during an appearance on The Wendy Williams Show in late March. When asked by host Wendy Williams if she and Stancil were still together, Metz replied, “I’m dating myself currently.”
Fortunately, work on the This is Us set, where Stancil also worked, has not been too awkward because he “moved onto another show” before the two split. Phew!
And it seems that Metz and Stancil left things on a good note. Metz told Williams that they’re “still friends,” which was clearly something that meant a lot to her. “I’m always friends with people who I was previously with, which is important to me, you know?” she said. “Because you care about the person. You don’t just, like, dump them off.”
Ruby Rose and Jess Origliasso
Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose, who played Stella Carlin on the hit Netflix show, and Jess Origliasso of the pop duo The Veronicas ended their relationship, though the exact date of their breakup is unclear.
On April 1, Rose took to Twitter to share that she and Origliasso, who appeared together in The Veronicas’ music video for ” On Your Side ,” had parted ways months earlier. “I’ve shared the past two years learning and sharing my life with an amazing human being. An experience for which I am very blessed,” she wrote in a text post. “Breakups are always hard on the people involved but I can only be grateful for the experiences we shared.”
After fans apparently thought that her announcement was an April Fool’s Day joke, Rose clarified that she’d “never use something so personal” as part of a public prank.
According to Billboard , Origliasso didn’t comment on her breakup from Rose at the time, but she did delete all photos of her ex on Instagram and unfollow Rose on all social media platforms.
