Little does one realise that when one plans a holiday what would be the sights that would be in store when one gets there. The tour conductors know it all and so when we were in Australia and Melbourne was part of that itinerary, we were taken to see Captain Cook’s cottage. Every sight that we see we have the guide explaining everything there is that we should know about.
.Captain James Cook a Britisher was the first who landed in Australia, Hawaii and New Zealand during his voyages of thousands of miles. I was surprised as I knew from my history books that he was from the UK. Then the tour guide narrated the whole story. The cottage which belonged to his parents was in Yorkshire and when it came up for sale,the Melbourne philanthropist, Russell Grimwade, bought it and it was shifted to Melbourne. We were told that there were hundreds of cartons packed and each and every item numbered to rebuild the cottage. That is now one of the tourist attractions in Melbourne. I do not know if there was payment involved for visiting this site as ours was a package deal and perhaps the fee there was any must have been included.
Lifting a cottage from one country to another is a feat that is not often realised. It was the zeal that made it happen not to talk of the money spent to buy it in the first instance and go through the hassle of lifting it all the way from one country to another.
It was astonishing to see how each and every item in the cottage was placed exactly in the same position when the cottage was in Yorkshire. I got a creepy feeling when we walked through the cottage imagining the presence of Captain Cook himself.
We were fortunate to see this cottage and the paraphernalia that lay inside the cottage. It was indeed fascinating that we got an opportunity to experience what hitherto was merely what we read in our history books.
