Sultan or Salman Khan – Review

In India, Friday is the fixed day for new movies but Salman Khan starer Sultan was released yesterday as a special case as Ramzan Id/Eid-ul-Fitar one of the most celebrated festivals was forecast for Wednesday depending upon rise of Moon according to Muslim tradition. Incidentally half of the population celebrated Eid on Wednesday and rest will be celebrating if today on Thursday 7 July 2016.

As far the movie Sultan it was being considered a big hit for a long time as some of its shooting was done in the surrounding areas since Salman Khan is playing the role of a wrestler from Haryana a neighboring state. However, there is a question being asked by most people that watched the movie on first day itself whether it was a movie of Salman Khan the superstar or the wrestler he portrayed in the movie.

Let’s look at the story line of Sultan which revolves round Sultan Ali Khan a resident of Rewari, a small town in Haryana. One day he meets a lady wrestler Arafa played by Anushka Sharma one of the leading film actress of Bollywood and asks her to marry him. Arfa tells him if he wants to marry her then he will have to prove that he deserves her by showing his worth.

Here begins the struggle of Sultan and he soon becomes an international wrestler but the success reaches to his head and becomes too proudly. That causes the differences in between Arfa and Sultan and part their ways. In the mean time Sultan gives up his wrestling career but prompted by a businessman to enter into professional wrestling and arranges for his martial arts training by an expert fighter. However, Sultan gets going tough due to his increasing age.

It could be a better with little bit of editing  

As a whole the story is based on a care-free character who becomes a wrestler after his marriage and the differences in their married life but the story and presentation of the movie is found wanting at different occasions. Editing of the movie left many loopholes that could be plugged to give this film a better gate. It is obvious that the entire movie revolves round Salman Khan and not Sultan and the worst part of the movie is that they have failed to utilize the Haryanvi language which has an added attraction in itself. The movie seriously lacks the traditional Haryanvi sense of humor which will certainly make a difference on its box office collection.

Those who have seen Salman Khan’s last movie Bajarangi Bhaijan would miss the ‘actor’ Salman Khan in Sultan as he has concentrated on his typical stardom rather than concentrating on his acting talent. However, that is one plus point for the producers of the movie as star value of Salman Khan cannot be ignored and half of the collection will come only by his presence.

Anushka as Arafa has failed to put any impression on the audience because she had no scope whatsoever although she did a good job as a lady wrestler speaking in almost perfect accent of the local language but as usual the hero Salman Khan has overshadowed her altogether. The movie is more focused on Salman and his wrestling bouts rather than beauty of the human relations. Sultan is an average movie but it will be in business for Salman Khan and occasion of Eid.
