Big fat Indian weddings – a sheer waste

There are a few rich people in India with bank accounts that bust at the seams. Having no microbes in their system that smell of charity they lavish on themselves just like the good old Nero did when he just ate and ate, vomited and ate again.

With just one or two children in families of these rich folks they have to do something to empty their coffers and the best way to do it to spend on weddings. We call them the big fat Indian weddings.

Here’s what is more or less done for the success of the event.

The venue will be decorated with lights so intense that the brightness of the sun per se will fade into insignificance. Fresh flowers will be used to decorate the stage, flowers brought from all over the world which will be thrown away the next day

– VIPs –  countless of them – will be put up in 5 star hotels having spent for their two and fro air travel. Many of them will be from foreign countries.

–  Every Tom, Dick and Harry will be invited but with an eye on those who they think will not behave –  in keeping with the standards of the rich and famous. They invite everyone as they need a crowd. There will be news the day after the event talking about how packed the venue was.

The bride will wear tons of gold making her difficult to walk around and her sari will be studded with diamonds and other precious stones – again a weight that will be difficult to carry around. This sari will never be worn again.

There will be food served in varieties never heard of before. Some dishes will be imported. Most guests, however, will not even know the names of these dishes but for their benefit there will be placards displayed with names and where the food has come from .

There will be dust bins galore. They will be needed as everyone who will eat there will have leftovers in their plates having eaten enough to last them for days.

There will be a lot of food left over in the kitchen as well which will also be thrown away as there is a rule here not to feed that food to the poor.

Billions will be spent just so that those who read about it the next day will be astonished but this astonishment will last for a few moments and everything will be forgotten.

The question is whether this is really important.  Instead how about creating a situation in memory of a wedding in a rich and famous household that the world at large will benefit?

This question will never be answered nor will we know how happy these couples will be in their married life.

    • @bestwriter We see similar excesses here in Canada: a dress that costs $10,000 and is only worn once, packing the reception hall with hundreds of people in order to receive the greatest number of wedding gifts, flowers that will be thrown away the next day, and much more.

My husband and I opted to skip all of this silliness when we were married. We had a very small wedding with immediate family only. The reception was like a family dinner at the restaurant. There was no wedding cake or special clothes, or silly party favours. We didn't feel the need for any of these extravagances. The focus was on our love, and the life we were starting together.
