Beginning to Watch Television Online

The idea of watching television online might seem odd, at first.  Then the thought of control,  of being able to view programmes when one wants,  coupled with the realisation one can view programmes that might have been missed or which were not broadcast in their nation, dawns.

Once this idea pops in the next question is what to watch.

With so many possibles, where should one start?

I would suggest finding a long running episodic serial.   By episodic I mean a program where outside of the characters, the location, and basic premise,  there is nothing much to link Episode 7 to Episode 8.  One one can watch in a marathon, (that is watching two or more shows back to back) until bored.  Along with a long serial should come a short novel put to visual.

Most American programmes are episodic, most British are story arc.   Most British shows have limited runs because they were written to have a beginning, middle and end, just like a hard copy novel.

By mixing these two different genres one has the long ‘overlapping’ serial as a base, the short novels as ‘intermissions’ and when the novel ends, the overlap continues and a new novel can be inserted.

Many American episodic shows, whether Blue Bloods, NCIS, Burn Notice, House, Suits, Grey’s Anatomy,  were or are broadcast for many seasons.  As one episode has nothing to do, very much, with the subsequent, one doesn’t lose ‘concentration’ by separating Season 3 episode 6 and episode 7 by an English programme as Night Manager, Wolf Hall, Foyle’s War or Broadchurch, which begin and end.

These are British ‘novels’ put to visual which must be seen in sequence.

When the novel ends, there is a bit of ‘mourning’ especially when the programme was rather good.  The longer episodic series distracts.  And a new ‘novel’ can be located and inserted.

Some people will wait until a current show ends its season before beginning to watch as the ‘cliff hanger’ or ‘continued’ episode can be annoying when one has to wait a week to see it.  Better not to watch the ‘new season’ of a program until it completes the season, so one can watch the episodes without dislocation.

    • I watch TV online only when I can not find the programs on regular television. To be honest, I don't really like it because of the annoying and interrupting glitches. Would much rather just watch TV. But sometimes what I want to watch is not on TV. Thank the Lord for the Internet! :)

      • When you don't live in the US or Britian you get catch as catch can TV. They will run House, for example, maybe part of the first season, then a year later, part of the third... nothing in order.

And now they bleep out everything... hell, damn... nothing you can't hear... and it's better to watch on line where there are no bleeps or commercials.
