Becoming a single mother and loving life

Being a single mother is still new to me. It has more than its fair share of ups and downs. Sometimes more downs than ups. It is scary and exciting at the same time. Adjusting to being single is another topic all together. You learn what being alone is and how to deal with it in your own way. When you add being a mother on top of that the lessons multiply. You begin to learn that you can’t control everything as easily as you once thought you could. And no matter how hard you try holding it all together is sometimes impossible.

With that being said I decided to try something I have never done before in my thirty-years of life. I planned a vacation for my two children and myself. Not only did I take my comfort zone to another level of anxiety I’m going to do a ton of things I have never done before. For the first time in my life I will drive three hours in a car in Dallas/Ft. Worth traffic with my children by myself. Then, we will all three get on a plane and none of has ever flown. And to put the cherry on top we will fly five states away from home!

At this point I’m clearly questioning my sanity! Yet, at the same time I’m gaining back my independence and the sense of “I can do this!”. I get to put myself to the test. “Can’t” has never been a word in my vocabulary and I refuse to let my kids use the word. I am learning that I can do a lot of things alone and without help. This being one of those things.

I have never been one to depend on someone else for things. I have a very bouncy level of anxiety that has always held me back from jumping off the deep end. However, this time I’m holding nothing back. I have enjoyed my newfound freedom in life and have had even more fun taking it to new levels. I feel as though if I can accomplish this then I can accomplish anything life hands me. Being a single mother doesn’t define who I am, rather it is the sprinkles on top of what I am in life. I have brought two wonderful children into this world. My opportunity is to show them that life doesn’t decide who we are. That choice is ours! We can sit back and let life run over us and hold us back or we can jump up and grab it by the ears and tell it where we are going.
