I have become a criminal after Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

I have become a criminal after Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Procedure but you will have read the entire post to find out the secret J

I have my gallbladder removed too in 2008 by robotic surgery (done through your belly button) takes one and half hour and there is no blood etc as in normal surgeries which take 10-12 stitches and a patient has to stay in the hospital for few days. Patient is administered a shot of anesthesia before the surgery begins.

Basically we call it surgery through belly button or without any stitches but in medical terms it is Robotic Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Procedure. Also a patient goes through all the preparation as in normal surgery with a difference that every action is performed by a robotic arm which is controlled by a doctor sitting away monitoring everything on his screen and guiding the robot to complete the process.

In my case it was a single stitch inside belly button which is not even visible. And inside the stomach the intestine separated from the removed gallbladder is jointed with the help of a metallic clip by the robot and removed gallbladder taken out through belly button itself. The whole process takes about an hour and thirty minutes and then patient is shifted to a hospital room because he is still under the influence of anesthesia. And a patient is relieved from hospital within 8-10 hours in most cases.

Let me make it very clear here at this point that Cholecystectomy is not traditional robotic surgery which still requires couple of incisions previously used as entrance points for the multiple robotic arms but the Cholecystectomy technology needs just one single incision at the belly button where the Cholecystectomy robotic instrument is placed and the GB is removed easily.

I am glad I went for robotic surgery although it is almost three times as costly as general surgery but it saved a week of my precious time because I went back to my work the third day after I had my GB removed. Besides I claimed all what spent from my health care provider.

In India where stones in kidney and gallbladder are a common problem and millions of patients go through the procedure every year and some of them who are too fearful avoid surgeries. I think for them laser surgeries for kidney and robotic surgery for gallbladder has provided a wonderful solution.

As far I am concerned the only downside is that when they search me on airports and the beep sound comes they take me to check thoroughly feeling that they have caught a big criminal. I watch their surprised and in some cases a disappointed feeling with a naughty smile on my face. I remember a lady officer who was probably having the same problem asked me in detail about the whole procedure at Sydney airport.

However the worst situation I faced was at Guwahati airport where I had gone with my brother in 2009. When the beep sound alarmed the guards at check-in point and they found nothing in search they took me to a room and ordered me to take all my clothes off. When they still failed to find anything objectionable they put me on X-ray test and then saw the small clip and let me go without any apology.

    • I thought that medical implants and prosthetic are made of the materials that doesn't trigger alarms.

    • @Rapid Blue I thought the same but the one in my stomach sounds a beep when I pass through a scanner

      • Eh!!?? So they just shod your gallbladder and let you walk around with the scanner 'bomb'?? Well, how nice they are. I recommend that you keep your medical letter with you all the time when traveling to avoid those striptease sessions.

    • I am not sure why you have clips internally. I think it is a foreign object that needs to be removed aside from the removal of the gallbladder. I am not sure with the procedure. However, to prevent from having this kind of scenario. I think you can have a clearance or medical certificate from your doctor. Then, there will be no hassle in traveling. What do you think?

    • That sounds like it must have been very scary to have happen at the airport! I agree with what Shavkat said - that sounds like it shouldn't have been left in you. I had the same surgery some years ago and nothing was left inside me.
