Anger!!! A word dreaded by some and loved by some. How often do we feel this emotion in our daily lives? It may happen that we ourselves feel it several times in a day or it may happen that we witness it in some of our near and dear one several times in a day. How do we feel when we feel or see it actually? Anything but pleasant…….it could be obnoxious, it could be exhilarating, it could make us feel powerful or perhaps powerless. There are a multitude of feelings associated with one of this most difficult and damaging emotions in the repertoire of human psychology.
History is replete with stories how uncontrolled anger led to rage which eventually led to spilling of blood and hundreds and thousands losing their precious lives as a result of it. The question is why do people associate with it so much? The answer is mainly two fold. Either they locate certain benefits arising out of anger or they are simply unable to get rid of it. For people who perceive benefits out of anger, they are by far the most miserable class since on one hand they allow themselves to be damaged and on the other hand they think they are being benefitted. There are so many myths associated with the benefits accruing out of this emotion called anger. The unlucky ones who are caught in these myths have a life of untold miseries. To make matters worse, they face and keep attributing these miseries to myriad other factors spinning around them. But they easily fail to see the real root reason behind them……..the reason called ANGER. For people who know the collateral damage that anger does, there are some who find it very difficult to get rid of the same. Yes! It is not easy to eliminate anger. But it is also not impossible either. This should not serve as a reason to justify prolonging this damaging emotion within oneself. In fact, the first important battle is won the day a person realizes that it is none other but anger, the root emotion, which is the cause of most of the problems faced by him.
In this series we shall discuss this emotion called anger in two clusters: first cluster (Parts II to V) where we would try to dispel the myths associated with the benefits of anger. This is to instil awareness among those most unfortunate persons who think anger is actually benefitting them. Then we would go over to the second cluster (Parts VI to X) where we would try to discuss certain methods following which this emotion called anger can be mostly eliminated.
