Most of us have heard of autism but never associate with anyone who are connected with us. We always think it will never happen to anyone in our vicinity. That is what we hope for. I hope too until I got a call from my niece that her son’s little one – 3 years old is showing signs of autism.
I quickly grabbed a search engine and went through all what is there to know about this dreadful condition – dreadful not just for the patient but for those around.
It is over 60 plus years since this condition was known but sadly no one has been cured so far.
An autistic person needs handling as no patient is the same as another to be able to apply common norms to contain the person’s symptoms.
Recommendations are that the parents should join groups where this is discussed, keep a vigil on the particular interest a child develops and work towards making that their goal. This takes time and parents could go wrong messing up things further but there is no clear path designed to reach there.
My research says it has a lot to do with environment under which the mother was exposed to before delivering the child although no signs will be there until they are manifested at a later date. And that is what has been noticed in this little boy which was not apparent till lately.
An autistic patient needs full time attention including several sittings with a therapist that could help to find out how best to nurture the child. There is no guarantee that the child will be fully understood.
Stem cell therapy is also being tried. It is still at its nascent stage. This could perhaps give some hope but how much that will cost is anyone’s guess.
I have yet to speak to the parents but I do not know how I will approach them. They both must be devastated.

I do agree that no one asks for having a family member to manifest the signs of autism. This would be the hardest part for parents to handle. However, people close to them should be supportive. In some point, as early as possible, the child should seek medical help and find ways to walk through the process. It is the most challenging for the parents to bear and accept the fate of their child. Autistic people have their own talents that can be developed and be enhanced with the help of their support system.
