These Artists will Leave this World, Unknown

It is sad that once an artist makes a name even if they draw a line that will sell like hot cakes and the real artists stay languished. I am not talking of all artists. There are some who maintain their standard until the dying day – Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci is one such.

Many artists are not allowed to lift their head and in fact become so depressed that they give up drawing, sculpting, painting or any other art. .

Even those that are famous today have had their share of disappointments – going from pillar to post to get their work approved. Same applies even to writers.

This guy was weaving. He had worn tattered clothes. I was in an auto and my eyes fell on some of the items that he had finished and were lying on the roadside. I got off the auto and I could not believe my eyes at the artistic work this artist in tattered clothes had produced. He had no name, no fame but he had one thing. He had art in him but no one recognised him. Those lines “Full many a gem of the purest ray serene, the dark unfathomed caves of the ocean bear”  –  lines from the Elegy in the Country Churchyard by Thomas Gray.

I picked up this piece you see in the photo –  a goblet and paid him whatever he asked for. One does not bargain with artists. He had used bamboo strips for weaving and had cleverly used both sides of the strip – one side was brown and the other beige. Only an artist would have thought of that. There was perfect symmetry.  There were no drawings that I could see.  They were all stored in his thoughts perhaps a visual of what he would ultimately produce. Every piece that I saw was woven to perfection.

This piece is adorning my hall and has been there for years. That I call my signature piece that attracts every visitor that I have.
