Are The Senior Citizens In Your Country Given Privileges?

Here in the Philippines, if a person reaches the age of 60, he/she will be called a senior citizen.

A senior citizen identification card can be claimed from the Office of the Senior Citizen Affairs from the municipality where he/she resides.

This senior citizen card will always be asked from the senior citizen whenever he/she claims the discount or privileges give to them by the government.

As a senior citizen the following are given a 20% discount and an exemption of Value Added Tax if applicable:

1.for goods bought by the senior citizens on necessities from supermarkets.

2. prescription medicines

3. professional fees of attending physicians in all private hospitals, outpatient clinics and medical facilities

4. medical and dental services, diagnostic and laboratory fees in all private hospitals and the like

5. all transportation vehicles for land , air and sea

6. utilization of services in hotels and other similar places, restaurants and recreation centers.

7. theaters and the like .

In our province, the senior citizens can watch movies for free on designated days from theaters in malls, assigned by the government .

8. funeral and burial services for the death of the senior citizen

9. Free medical and dental services , laboratory and the like from all government facilities subject to the Dept. of Health guidelines.

If any establishments will deny them of these discounts, they can be reported and be slapped a penalty by the regulating body of the government.

Actually, last night, Valentine’s day, the cashier of the posh restaurants told the waitress when she gave to her the 3 senior citizen cards of my parents-in-law and aunt to be applied on the billing of 3 dishes only from all the dishes we ate, said that no discounts shall be applied because we made an early reservation prior to going there, since we know there would be lots of customers.

However, my brother insisted on their privileges and told the cashier that the non-application of the 20% discount when reservation is done is not on the Republic Act on Senior Citizens , acted by the Philippine government.

He further said that if they will not honor the said 20% discounts, he will report the establishment. The discount maybe not big, but what he is after is that it be given to the senior citizens we are with.

Having heard that, the cashier applied the 20% discount each on 3 dishes only of the many dishes we ordered that night.

What about in your country do they also have these privileges for the senior citizens?

Note : Picture is mine. It is where we dined last night, Valentine’s day.

    • The country is under Mr.Duterte.As long as it is under the administration of a single man everything will take place in proper order and any defiance to the established rules and regulations will be viewed severely. India, being under different Administrators each state having their own rules and regulations expecting such facilities will be not possible.
However, there are some concessions but not as many as the Sr citizen of Philippines have got. They got 40% discount on Train fare. In some important places, like temples, they will be allowed without waiting in a queue. As far the medical facilities are concerned they are not available to all. But, the Governments are introducing them slowly. Most of the Administrators are of a conservative type and they spend more on eating the public money than providing facilities to the public. The young generations are entering into politics very slowly and hence the new methods and innovations are also taking place in a slow manner.

      • But at least the discount on the fares are 40%, double the discount rate of our seniors here.

Actually, if only the administrators there are thinking in long term when it comes to their time to be senior citizens, they would be doing some more privileges for the seniors there.

I suppose the seniors there have high pensions so that's why they don't ask that other privileges should be given to them also.

    • Very nice to know, glad you enjoyed your Valentines day, i enjoyed as well. Yeah in our country as well they have many schemes and discounts for senior citizens but i will check them out after 32 more years LOL

      • Are your parents already senior citizens? If they are, have you asked them what are their privileges as senior citizens.

From what I have read on sivasubrahmanyam's comment the seniors there have 40% discount on fares. That's nicer because it's double the dsicount on fares that the seniors are getting here. So if it's a long travel it will really be a great help.
