Anxiety – Basic Emotion

Anxiety is among the first emotions humans experience and it is a familiar feeling for most people. It developed to allow humans to perceive danger and react quickly, the species wouldn’t have survived without it. The critical physical mechanism of anxiety is the fight or flight response – autonomic arousal – that prepares the body to confront or flee from danger. This arousal leads to the physical feeling of a racing heartbeat, rapid breathing, and sweating…which are familiar to most people who’ve ever had to speak in front of a crowd or ask someone they like out on a date.

Anxiety is useful because it helps people perform at their peak level. Research has shown that people perform better when they experience some level of anxiety, rather than none at all. It also allows people to make quick decisions regarding potentially dangerous situations. For example: it may keep someone from walking into a dark alley late at night, or jump quickly out of the way of a car.

Just as a lack of anxiety can keep people from reaching their peak performance, so can excess anxiety. When anxiety becomes an extreme or chronic part of people’s lives – it has transitioned from a useful indicator of danger into a maladaptive reaction. This would be the case if someone not only avoids dark alleys late at night but also safe shopping malls on a Saturday afternoon. Because everyone experiences some level of anxiety, not all levels of anxiety are classified as a disorder. When anxiety becomes highly distressing or interferes with one’s functioning, treatment may be needed to help the symptoms.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most highly supported treatment for anxiety disorders. It’s based on the idea that anxiety is learned via operant conditioning, where someone begins to pair an association to something with an anxious feeling…which then goes on to create more anxiety in the future. Cognitive behavioral therapy works to rework the faulty thinking and challenge negative belief systems. There are a number of manualized treatment packages that have been developed to target specific anxiety disorders and those have been shown to be quite effective. The treatments vary depending on the exact anxiety disorder being treated but most share common features – use of exposure techniques, cognitive challenging, relaxation, and psychoeducation. These features, along with a plethora of studies, make cognitive behavioral therapy the most highly recommended treatment for anxiety disorders.
