Anil Kumble as a person is altogether different from the present day generation of international players especially the way modern day cricketers are behaving on-field and off-field. He is made of a different material which most of his contemporary and next generation players are not even aware barring Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni to some extent.
Anil Kumble born in 1970 has played 132 Test matches, 271 one day international matches has taken 619 and 337 wickets respectively as the leading spinner in the world cricket. He has also scored over 2500 runs in test matches and just under 1000 runs in ODI as he used to bat down the order or was not required to bat in most cases.
He has several records for his bowling for India but he is in limelight for his selection as head coach of the Indian team beating his nearest rival Ravi Shastri another former Indian Captain and who held the post of director of team India until the last month. Shastri was being considered as the front-runner for the job among the scores of serious contenders until the former leg-spinner not came on the scene and took everyone by surprise.
I remember some of his performances with the ball including the Kotla test match in Indian capital New Delhi against Pakistan in 1996 in which he took all 10 wickets in an inning. A few years later he came out with heavy bandage on his broken jaw to ball in a test against West Indies in Antigua in the year 2002. These are only a few examples which show his sportsman spirit otherwise if you look at the record books his balling figures have a different story to tell.
I don’t think anyone would be talking about his coaching skills as Anil has no prior experience of coaching at any level or anyone ever imagined that he will selected India’s head coach over Ravi Shastri’ s claims especially while Shastri had full support of current Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli and other players but the cricket advisers for Indian team had some other points in their mind.
The main thing that went against Shastri that he took his claim for the post for granted and went out of India and thought there is no one in his competition so appeared in the interview through Skype for a video interview but Anil Kumble had prepared well with all the presentation work seriously along with other contenders at the venue where the interview was held.
Moreover, the controversy that surfaced after the selection of Anil Kumle was announced took an ugly shape especially with counter attacks in between Ravi Shastri and Sourabh Ganguly one of the three members and former Indian captain of Indian team that were part of selection committee. In fact there were too many former Indian captains involved including Sachin, Sourabh, Anil, Ravi and some of them from background. That's a good thing for a person to be coaching the players of crickets. It is the best start for him to share his experiences in playing crickets. I am sure your fellowmen were so delighted to have him as cricket coach.
@Shavkat you gotta know my fellow countrymen who are never satisfied or unanimous on one thing. They would have made same hue and cry if any of the other contender would have been selected. In my views the best one got selected and now it is his chance to prove his worth.
I am very happy that senior is appointed as coach of the new team in India really I am very on this he will make better the new coming team. Anil Kumble was appointed as new India cricket team coach by BCCI president Anurag Thakur after his name was recommended by cricket advisory committee members Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman. He will take over the role for a period of one year.
Kumble has served as mentor for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Questions will be raised over his appointment given the lack of experience at the top level.
He comes in as first coach since Duncan Fletcher’s contract expired after the was axed in 2014. Ravi Shastri was officially the ‘Team Director’ after the Zimbabwean.
