An Example of Deadly Selfishness in Kaduna, Nigeria

I witnessed one examples of selfishness in marriage in Kaduna, Nigeria. The story makes me to shed tears. This is the story.”A wife of a soldier was a trader. She went to distant markets trading on bags of cereals. Then, from the rank of Private to Warrant officer in the Nigerian Army goes home with less than a thousand Naira. The husband of the sick woman was a sergeant. The soldier’s wife became sick and was hospitalized at Armed Forces Reference Hospital, Kaduna. That day, I was on hospital visitation. After doctor’s attention, her husband, the sergeant was told to go and buy an injection which costs Three Hundred Naira (N300.00) only. The injection was out of stock in the hospital’s pharmacy. From the time the soldier went to borrow money from his friends to complete the money he had and the time taken to purchase the injection from the Central market in Kaduna, his wife died. The soldier’s wife was taken to the mortuary and stripped. As the attendants were stripping the soldier’s wife, they saw a heavy waist bag. When they opened the bag, it contained Twenty Seven Thousand, Nine Hundred Naira (N27, 900).The attendants kept the money. When the soldier came back with the injection, he saw that his wife was no more on the hospital bed. He looked around and did not see her. He went and asked the nurses. They told him that his wife died about thirty minutes ago and has been taken to the mortuary. The sergeant rushed to the mortuary in tears only to be halted by the attendants. The attendants told the sergeant that his wife killed herself. The husband was surprised at their statement. They quickly brought out the waist bag containing the money and handed it over to the sergeant. The sergeant, the husband of the deceased woman went home crying the more. He cried that his wife became so selfish that she had money on her while he went to borrow money from his friends for her treatment.However,from the money recovered from the late woman’s waist her corpse was taken to their village for burial and the soldier after all bought a brand new Yamaha motorcycle after burial expenses.”This was how the soldier’s wife lost her life to selfishness. Those who exhibit selfishness do not show real love to their spouses. If there was cooperation from the late soldier’s wife she would have not died. After this episode, I continue to advise couples to desist from being selfish because sometimes selfishness boomerangs.
