My adventure in learning to cut hair
I have never thought I can cut hair for others or myself. Since I was young, I always thought this is a very challenging thing to do, and risky as well. How if I accidentally cut off a bunch of hair and spoil the whole hair? How if I accidentally hurt the head by a cut? How if I can’t make the hair even on both sides? Hence, I always admire those hairdressers that they have the courage to do so.
My First Guinea Pig – My son
The first time I cut a person’s hair was when my elder son was less than two years old. He did not want to go to saloon and have his haircut, hence I had to do it myself. Of course, the first haircut was not good at all, moreover I cut his hair while he was sleeping. He kept moving while he was awake, so I could only cut his hair while he was asleep. It took me at least two times to cut his hair, I cut on one side first, when he turned over, then only I cut the other side. Sometimes, one haircut could be split into a few days. Glad that my son did not mind how his hairstyle was and how he looked at all, he was even happy and proud that mom cut his hair for him. 😀
Of course, others might comment on the bad haircut, but it did not bother me anymore. As long as I found a way to cut my son’s hair and he was happy, that’s good for me. When he grew older, he was able to sit properly and let me cut his hair. After having more practice and gaining more experience, many people think my son’s hair looks much better now.
Second Guinea Pig – My husband
My husband asked me to cut his hair for him last two years. We think it’s easier if we can cut our own hair, so we can save more and we do not need to go to the saloon. Both my husband and I do not like to go to saloon, especially with two young children. We bought a hair clipper, and I learned how to use it to cut my husband’s hair. Though I still prefer using scissors, it’s much faster to use the hair clipper. Glad that nobody complained or laughed about my husband’s hair, even though he needs to go out and work. 😀
Third Guinea Pig – Myself
I read from mylot, someone cut her own hair. I found it interesting, and thought it is a good idea, I might just give it a try. Since I have gained the experience from cutting hair for my husband and my two children, I should be able to do it! I went to YouTube and watched a few videos. Then, I started to cut my own hair since last year. I am not a fashionable person, I always prefer simple haircut, and now I want it to be short too. So, I think it’s easier for me to cut my own hair, just make it as short as I want it to be.
My husband also cuts his hair and the children’s hair, and helps to trim my hair at the back sometimes (If he doesn’t have time to trim my hair, I will just leave it). I think it’s really fun and convenient to cut our own hair, I can just do it anytime I want. It can be an addictive activity. It is a good family bonding time for us too. Just a pair of scissors, and you can start your adventure in hair cutting.

@Lee Ka I sometimes get the urge to cut my own hair rather than call someone over or go to a saloon but no courage to do it. How do you with your self cutting project? (lol)
Cutting of hair is a tricky affair. When you see it being done on video it looks all so easy but you try then you will know how hard it is. I remember when I want to hair school we used to be shown videos of professional hair cutters and how they do their work, we just used to love the way they shift hands from one and to the other, until we were out to test. We first begun with our manequines and everything looked fine. In someone's head it's another story altogether. Trying to get the proportions right can really frustrate you. My first client was a student just like me i started off quite well, until the teacher asked a question and I think I lost concentration and with that i ended up shaving my friends hair in the wrong way and that made her shave all get hair. You can imagine the apologies that came after that mess. Thank God she was actually thinking about shaving her hair so it's like i did her a favor that relieved me. And that marked the end of my aspiring to be a barber at any one time. It's so hard, I can do all the other things in th3 hair but when it comes to shaving I surrender am just not good at it. Though I remember it all started when I was asked to she a my nieces hair when she was only I year old. I dreaded but as a tradition the first aunty should be the one to cut the baby's hair. I did it yes but my hands were shaking all the way and my niece was wailing like nothing but I managed.
