A CHALLENGE TO EVERY EDUCATORS

THE CHALLENGE

Educators can’t help but notice and compare the traits of students we handle every year. Sad to say, students now lack the sense of responsibility towards education. Most of them have the come-what-may attitude. They do not even care if they are learning something or not. They are not grade- conscious, which in some aspect may be positive since grades are not the only measure of learning. Only their parents are concerned with their grades. Inside the classroom, it has become normal for a teacher to stop from her facilitation duties three to five times an hour just to keep the class quiet and paying attention so that learning can take place.

Submitting requirements on time does not seem to bear significance for students nowadays. Teachers remind them several times to comply yet many fail to do so. Has education become too friendly? Worst, students who get the lowest scores in assessments seemingly do not care. These and many others are the changes educators observe.

How did it happen? Why the sudden change? When did the students lose their sense of responsibility? Did we, the educators, missed to direct them? Whatever the answer is, one thing is for sure. We need to address the challenge we face now. The challenge for educators and the adult community is to knit and carve ways for the younger generation to learn that responsibility starts from them. It is not too late. The collaborative efforts of parents, teachers, and the community, by setting examples would make a great difference.

Whether one is a teacher, a parent, a concerned citizen or even a stranger, we are called to help the young generation. They would be our legacy. We are responsible for rearing them to be the best that they can be so we must start fulfilling our duties while they are young.
