Last Saturday, at 6:00 a.m. in the morning the electricity suddenly went off. I immediately called the Maintenance and Operations Head at our office to ask if there is a scheduled brownout ( those in other countries calls it blackout, while us here if it is the whole country we call it blackout and brownout if it’s in a certain place). She said yes but not in our office since we have our own substation.
Thus, we had a brownout from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. So, I just cleaned our bedroom and after that read this booklet and another book. At least, I learned a lot.
Since I was trying to retard my aging and would like to still have a long life, I like reading books about health. And the auntie of my husband who came from the US after 35 years and finally lives with us, brought with her a big boxful of books, mostly about health books, especially for the seniors.
No wonder, when she came home, she looks so much younger than her age of 82.
Anyways, one of my valuable reading is about eating spicy foods. You see, I am fond of spicy foods. Though, not very, very spicy, just a bit more than the moderate level.
It says that eating spicy foods such as hot sauces and jalapenos can help our heart. Research says that it is possible that eating spicy foods from the group of pepper plants may help block coronary buildup and keep the blood flow well. An ingredient in chilis, called capsaicin that provide these chilies with heat can help lower blood pressure and can possibly prevent damage leading to blood clots.
Hmm, maybe that’s why my blood pressure is always so normal, 100/80. No wonder.
Another health benefit in these chilies is that it can help lower the harmful cholesterol in our bodies. Wow, that’s really a healthy treat for us lovers of spicy foods.
Though, eating spicy foods has its disadvantage on me. In addition to the hot climate especially during summer, it triggers my hot flushes.
I would wake up in the middle of the night suddenly so sweaty especially in my neck area, despite an electric fan steadily fanning me and the screened windows, open.
I would wipe those sweat but it would keep sweating. Though in a little while it will be gone. But it is bothersome, especially now that summer is again soon coming. Though, since December up to last week, with the weather still cold because of the Siberian wind that affects the Philippines, I never had hot flushes.
However, no matter if it will add to the triggers to my hot flashes, I still would be eating spicy foods because the healthy treat to my heart is much more important.
Besides, I am in the Bicol Region fo the Philippines, where spicy foods are what most Bicolanos cook and love to eat, so I cannot avoid eating spicy foods. It seems that a vegetable cooked in coconut milk will not be delicious if it isn’t made spicy by a chopped Thai chili or jalapeno. Besides spicy foods are my favorite.
Furthermore, hot flushes cannot kill, but a blocked artery can. So I choose to eat spicy foods.
Are you a spicy food lover too?
