How to Entertain Healthy Food for your Guests

Whenever there is a happy festival or occasion such as birthdays, 

Chinese New Year, Christmas Day, we love to eat and entertain our 

relatives and family members with favorite party food.

 

A time of celebration of a happy occasion, your guest look forward to

 an array of delicious food from cakes, jellies, thick curries and fried 

chicken.

 

However, are you serving the right amount of healthy and nutritious

 food to your guests?

 

Everyone is afraid of the high risk diseases’ namely:

Diabetes

High blood pressure

Heart Attack

Obesity

 

You and your guests are hoping to enjoy this happy festival or party with 

delicious food but everyone is also cautious with the food served.

 

Hence, in order to serve healthy and nutritious food, it is wise to treat

 your guests with a wholesome healthy eating experience, less calories

 food, healthy snacks and swap high saturated fats with less fats instead.

 

Healthy Eating Tips:

 

 

Cookies and cakes

Most cookies and cakes are made with plain flour, coarse white sugar and

 margarine which are high in calories and cholesterol. 

 

Replace:

1. plain flour with wheat flour, 

2. white sugar with brown sugar or icing sugar

3. Margarine with no salt butter

 Alternatively, you don’t have time to bake cookies and cakes, simply 

don’t serve any of these sweet treats at all in your party snack ideas.

 

 

 

Curries and stir fried noodles

 

Commonly served festive dishes such as chicken curry with thick coconut 

milk and stir fried oily spicy noodles are must have at parties.

 

In order to cut down the fats , reduce the serving per person into half.

 

For example, if you guests love chicken curry , replace thick coconut milk

 with thin coconut milk instead.  

 

Use less oil during initial cooking, add in condense milk instead of sugar.

 

For stir fried noodles, refrain from using yellow noodles which are oily 

and unhealthy.

 

Use udon noodles, pasta or angel hair spaghetti, made from buckwheat 

or wholewheat.

 

You can stir fry these noodles with the regular spicy paste or black pepper

 sauces as usual.

Deep fried nuggets and samosa snacks

 

Avoid these deep fried snack food which absorb too much oil in order to

 become crispy and crunchy.

 

Malaysians favorite fried snacks include Murukku ( Indian crispy snacks),

 curry puff and fried crackers with ground peanuts on top.

 

Instead, serve more stir fried vegetables such as cabbages, mushroom

 with broccoli, vegetable salads and fresh cut fruits as side dish.

 

You could also serve a nice chilled bowl of assorted local fruit salad with 

original yogurt instead of flavorful yogurt.

 

 

 

Fried chicken

Swap the regular fried chicken with baked honey chicken, grilled or pan

 fried garlic chicken breast for a healthier main course meal.

 

Remember to remove the chicken fats and skin before cooking.

 

 

 

Coconut milk rice ( Nasi Lemak)

This is one of the staple food in Malaysia, Coconut milk rice where white 

rice is cooked with thick coconut milk, ginger, screwpine leaves for an

 aromatic flavor. 

 

However, Nasi Lemak is also well known for its high cholesterol and 

calories content in the rice itself.

 

Hence, replace rice with brown rice, white rice, baked potatoes or 

mashed potatoes which are non oily and filling too.

 

 

Cold drinks

Instead of carbonated soft drinks and sugary store bought orange juice, 

why not serve your guest with fruit punch made from fresh cut out fruits 

and juices. 

 

Refrain from using canned fruit juice because they are high in sugar too.

 

Some other homemade cold drinks such as Ice Lemon Tea, Green tea,

 Fruit smoothies are popular among kids and teens.

 

However, the best drink of all is plain water, drink lots of glasses to

 quench down your thirst!

    • I think a pot of soup is good too.
      It is easy to make, and you can have it with noodle or rice.
      After that, serve fresh fruits to finish off the meal.

    • The wonderful thing about food is you can always mix and match and fix a little something for everybody! :)

    • Healthy foods for guests are most important because it is the honor of the head of the home. My parents are coming to stay for a week and am starting to plan my menus for their visit. Want to have the fridge and pantry fairly stocked for "impromptu" breakfasts, lunches, and cocktails. Just curious what others like to have on hand when guests come to stay.

      I know this will vary a lot from group to group, but here's mine:

      - good sliced bread for toast and sandwiches

      - cheddar cheese, for sandwiches, mac and cheese, etc.

      - salad greens and add-ons (vegetables, homemade croutons, cooked crumbled bacon, pumpkin seeds, in my case)

      - pasta and either jarred sauce or canned tomatoes and fresh basil

      - frozen pre-cooked shrimp

      - frozen boneless chicken breasts and frozen chicken thighs

      - scallions, garlic, parsley, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, eggs, cream, and the usual pantry staples.

      With this I can make breakfasts light and hearty (toast and coffee, frittata) lunch ditto (mac and cheese, chicken noodle soup) and dinner (fried or braised chicken, shrimp and pasta, salad as side dish or main course...) late snacks (toasted cheese sandwiches, spaghetti with garlic and olive oil...

      I might plan on several more set dinners, like roast beef or a grilled pork loin, but this is what would cover the other, more casual and impromptu meals.

    • It's not that easy to think of a healthier food for a guest that is very good for their taste, so most of the time, buying some foods at the store is more preferable.
      But these post gives a little bit idea on how to make a healthier food that easy.
