Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.

This is a book review of the children’s novel ‘Number the Stars’ by Lois Lowry.  This is a book that is set in the 1940’s during World War II and what the Jewish people for the most had to endure during that time.  This is a story that will make children and adults think what good is war.  This is also a story that will make you think about the friendships you make in your life no matter what decade you are living.

In the story there are two girls who are best of friends one Protestant and one Jewish.  There names were Anne Marie and Ellen and one night German soldiers came looking for Anne Marie and her family to take them away to a concentration camp and Ellen’s family told the German soldiers that they did not know where Anne Marie’s family went.

This is also a story of faith and what you believe.  It is also a story of being able to look your fear in the eyes and to see that family is more than just having a biological parents, but it is also having friends that are willing to put themselves in danger to help you in someways and at the time that this story is set a lot of people had to do this to protect their friends.  This is also a story of faith no matter what your religion may be whether it be Christian, Jewish, Pentecostal or whatever.   We are all made in God’s image.

“Number the Stars’ is a book that will make you think ‘What if?”  It is also a children’s book that can be read by adults and is quite thought-provoking and makes you think of the personal side of religion and what you hold most dear whatever it may be from family, friends to maybe the things that make you think of your many friend and family.

    • I remember reading this book in 6th grade and it really is a great book. There is a terrifying scene that involves Anne Marie's Star of David necklace and its almost giving her away as being a Jew.

    • I have not heard of this book before.
Given the context, it sure is a good book for the discouraged people when times are really tough, and hatred is rampant.

      • You are right and I have read this book for my Masters and I have reread this book several times more and each time it makes me think how lucky I am.
