Becoming a Manager – My concerns

So this blog is basically just going to be my thoughts on becoming a first line manager. The reasoning behind it is that I start my new job as a first line manager tomorrow. I have a meeting with my deputy Governor at 9:30 and I have loads of plans and ideas but nothing written down and am panicking a bit.

Obviously, I cannot explain my plans on here as that would probably get me sacked but I can discuss some of my concerns.

Concern number 1:

I am taking over as a hub manager for the hub that I work in, but they are not replacing me. Well they are replacing my 2 days a week but that really isn’t anywhere near enough to cover the full time and a bit hours I work.

Concern number 2:

I will be managing the people that I was working at the same level as on Friday. So, I left work on Friday their colleague I walk in on Monday their manager. They all know I am going to be the manager and I don’t think any of them mind particularly but I do think it might cause animosity at times.

Concern number 3:

I am the youngest and least experienced in the team, now you might be thinking well why did they promote you then? Well there are 4 others in the team 2 who are part time and although they could have applied it isn’t common for people who are part time to get promoted unless they want to up their hours. 2 off them are full time but they didn’t apply, I am 100% certain the one of them doesn’t want to progress and pretty sure the other feels the same. I have worked really hard since I have been there and do want to progress and I think I have learned more than most in the time I have been there but I am still very aware that my knowledge is limited. So I have a lot of learning to do.

Concern number 4:

I have never managed before, well not people anyway. I am very hard working, pick things up fast and haven’t found the job difficult yet, but I am not naturally a people person. I am quite worried about my ability as an actual manager, not the work side but the people side.

Concern number 5:

I don’t actually know what the job entails, that might sound crazy but I don’t. I have had a lot of jumbled hand over bits and bobs from the last manager but other than that I am going to go in tomorrow and not actually know what I need to do on day one, and annoyingly the last manager isn’t in until Tuesday so I can’t even ask!

So those are my concerns, now that I have written them down they seem worse, but I am sure plenty of people have been in the same situation before and handled it so I will have to. In fact, the last manager didn’t have any had over at all so I have at least got better than that.

Wish me Luck 🙂
