Soil Mounds, Are They Home of Elves?

In grasslands or vacant lots, you can see an elevated portion or a raised portion of soil called mounds. It looks like a small hill of land, usually conical in shape, or with rounded top.

When we were young, old people say they are home of elves, so we should say respectful words when passing near it; like “excuse us, please let us pass!” We do not dare touch or step on it, thinking that the “occupants” will cast their spell on us. They said that we will get sick when they get angry if we disturb their homes.

Home of Termites

Then when we were old, we knew that the soil mounds are homes of termites! They usually form the small hills where they reproduce and keep its eggs. The queen termite is also inside the mound.

Termites eat wood, and other biodegradable materials like paper, clothes, etc. They can easily penetrate a house through its base or through pipes within the house, then they will attack wood floorings, cabinets, etc. especially areas of the house that are usually untouched. So it is better to always inspect all the parts of the house, particularly the stock rooms, cabinets, etc. See if there are signs that there are termites attacking the home.

One Way to Eradicate Termites

Before we had our house constructed, a friend who has a pest control business urged us to have the lot soaked in anti-termite solution. They flooded the diggings for the posts and the floorings before any construction was done.

All the wood materials used for the ceilings, the cabinets, etc. were also soaked in that anti-termite solution. After the construction was done, they “injected” the anti-termite chemical solution at the corners, and all parts of the house. It is good that the solution they used was not poisonous to pets like dogs, and it has no foul odor.

Though it is costly to have the pest control treatment, our house is protected from termites, but the treatment has to be repeated after three years. Three years had passed but we observed that there are no termites in our home. We could have the treatment in some later months.

    • He he he it is so interesting to remember the bygone days. When I was also a child or elder sisters also told us the same story, our parents do not tell us something superstitious.Yeah, me too had spoken those words when passed not only lie this but whenever pass bamboos hehehehe and big trees, so funny when I grew big, I still fear of some unknowns. I am so amused of our fictitious beliefs .

      • Yes, it is so funny, but like you, I still say "tabi, tabi po!" (please stay away!) when I pass by a very old jackfruit tree at the gate of my sister's house because they say it was enchanted and some spirits are living there. They said it was the reason why there were so many road accidents along that area, on the road near that tree. I also ask "permission" when we park our car there so the "occupants" will not get angry!
