70 % Passing Rate Is Implemented In Our University Effective Second Semester 2017 , Because Of This Many Students Failed And Scared

Our school administrators changed the passing rate in our university from 50 % to now 70% .This is so because for two years now, there is low percentage rate of the Engineering Board Examination and so with Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). In fact, the recent teachers board examination, passers were not shown in the university campus, perhaps only few pass the LET exam. Then all teachers can always see the students always having their happy times bonding with their classmates in their favorite hangout in mall which is just fronting the university campus main gate, the Lim Ket Kai Center. I, myself often see them just chatting nonsense and table to table eating in Jollibee or in McDonald and so many of them.

I wonder what’s inside their mind why never liked to protect their grade and their parent’s feelings. They always dine in fast foods so meaning they have lots of money, but they do not have books. There are so many teachers having a hard time lecturing students only few having a book, so difficult for they also do not care to listen to lectures. It seems their minds are wondering nowhere. Perhaps they always like freedom to roam around the city, to beaches, to movie houses. Some were having a culture shock especially those who are from provinces and when entered the city with many temptations, so instead of studying hard to pass all the subjects and graduate, so sad at the end of every semester, they only have few passing grades.

This week is our final examination week and already had checked some and input some in the system using the 70% passing grade rate already programmed. I noticed that I have one section, no one passed. I was so depressed for in this section, no one had written and defended a thesis paper which is their course requirement to graduate next year. Other sections, out of 45 students, only 19 passed. Almost all my 8 subjects many failed .Almost 65% of the total population of 365 failed. It is the computer already programmed computes the grades we input. This is indeed a terrifying result first time to experience in my teaching. Actually, I cried in silence for I pity my students. I already told them before that though they are present in class, yet during a quiz, they do not reach the 70% passing, their presence in class is useless. They have to listen attentively especially those who disliked buying a book. Here comes now the time they regret. I interviewed one student about his subjects and their grades his answer was, out of 9 subjects he enrolled, 5 failed. Many cried for fear that their parents may not anymore send them to school.

Because of this 70% passing rate, displayed in the campus many images to trigger the students to study hard .These ads are reminders of the college and senior high school students that education is so important and in the absence of a degree, one cannot have a better life for it is only through education that one can become somebody someday.

Our university was formerly named Mindanao University of Science and technology (MUST) .Just recently; its name is changed from MUST to University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP). The original name of this school was DON MARIANO MARCOS MEMORIAL POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE (DMMMPSC).
May all students here behaved well and study well for their own benefit and fame.

    • So pitiful, they surely cry. It is hoped that by next semester there is better performance of their academic life. It is their fault fro they never take their studies seriously. They are tempted with the works of technology and bonding with friends.
