Song of the Day – Day 3 – Everybody Hurts – R.E.M

So a slightly more modern song for Day 3, I know technically it is day 4 but I was super busy yesterday so couldn’t post so I am going to get day 3 and 4 done today.

This song was released in 1992 (yes totally modern only 25 years old now) wow that makes me feel old. The drummer of R.E.M Bill Berry wrote it which might surprise some people. It is one of those songs that can make you feel so depressed and somehow comforted at the same time.  The song was aimed at teenagers and for this reason the lyrics are really straight to the point, for example the line ‘Everybody Hurts, take comfort in your friends’ is probably the best advice you could give a teenager going through a hard time.

The song only reached number 7 in the UK charts which is baffling to me as it such a popular song even today. It reached number 29 in the US Billboard and its highest chart position was in France where it got to number 3. It re-charted in the UK in 2010 at number 92 and in Germany in 2012 at number 83. It reached Gold status in Italy and Silver status in the UK.
