Not Until You Lose Do You Get It

On the Dorm was a woman I’ll call Kerry.  Every Sunday Kerry would take all the garbage from the kitchen and walk one hundred yards to the big bin and dispose of it.   It was not her garbage.  She had very little garbage for she was one of those frugal careful people.

The other girls, some real garbage producers, would pack their bags in the kitchen on Sunday for Kerry to take it out.   Kerry always did.  Not a complaint.  Sunday was her day.

Kerry would, if you said it was your birth day, go and buy you a really expensive chocolate.  Something you really would enjoy.

That was how Kerry ‘stayed’.

Abena came to the Dorm.  She was loud, nasty runt of a gal.  A lot of people didn’t like her, but had nothing to say.   One day Abena picked a fight with Kerry.  No one stuck up for Kerry.  Not one of the girls.

After that, Kerry, who had been friendly and smiling and polite became very quiet and distant and would pass without ‘seeing’ you.   She stopped throwing out the garbage.   She’d throw out her own, and live the other bags mount to the ceiling.

Kerry didn’t buy any more chocolate for any one.  She ignored them and their birthdays and only spoke to them if necessary, mostly, “excuse me” if they were in the way.  If she could avoid them, she would.

It became obvious that Kerry was no longer ‘part’ of the dorm community.   She came and went and said nothing to anyone.

One of the girls announced her birthday, Kerry said; “Happy Birthday,” and walked on.  There was chocolate.

All of a sudden people began to get this itchiness.   They began to appreciate Kerry and see that they should have spoke to Abena.  Abena did nothing, wasted everything, was inconsiderate.  But Abena did what she pleased.

Abena never took out the garbage, never did favours for anyone, never was friendly.  Just a loud brawling gal.

And having lost Kerry, they just began to realise their mistake.

    • Like they say you never know what you are loosing until you loose it. It is very sad to think that her friemds could actually treat a fellow friend the way they did. If they would only be a bit considerate.
But that is usually a problem when you live like 2 3 in a house or apartment that is bound to happen. There are those who will feel like they arw superior to everyone else. So they may take it that everybody else should do chores but they shouldn't, that attitude is very annoying. I would expect everyone to take responsibility in the house and also help out whenever need arises. It was unfortunate that keery was no more. The thing is now they are the ones who will have to live with the guilt of doing her wrong. Kerry did her part and she doesn't have to live with any guilt.
