There are many who would like to go out and enjoy a swim especially when the weather is hot. A swim cools our body from the oppressive heat and also relaxes us and provides us relief from the weather.  Different kinds of people would like to go for a swim at different locations. The locations vary from water bodies which are very rough to the ones which are placid. Here is a list of places where people go to cool themselves with a swim and the risks involved at such places. We will also evaluate how to make this experience safe and pleasant.

The first place which comes to ones mind when it comes to swimming in the cities is the swimming pool. This is a place which generally has a fifty meter quality pool with a depth from four to fifteen feet.  There is also a baby pool which is available for young children and the depth there is only around less than four feet. Pools also have a water purifier system which cleans the pool water and again recharges the pool. There is also sufficient amount of oxygen present which is maintained in the swimming pools. One safety rule to be followed by all is never to swim alone in waters.

One generally has a one hour batch and there will be around five to six batches in the morning and almost around the same number in the evening. One needs to have the right costume and maintain the right kind of hygiene to be able to swim in the pool. In our country during summer months there is high demand on pools as everyone would like to have a dip as the weather is hot.  There are around 50 to 75 people in a batch which tends to make the pool crowded.  There is also a rope tied near the four feet depth of the pool so that beginners can learn to swim in that place. While those experienced use the other side which is deep. On the deep side the number is between thirty to forty. There is a head coach who is supported by five other coaches to help people learn and practice and also be the life guard in case of an emergency.

There are certain risks which one has to be wary of when going for a swim at the  pool. Make sure the water is cleaned regularly and check about the same. Try to wear a cap and have ear plugs and nose clips too as water tends to go inside. Wear a glass which swimmers wear to protect their eyes. The cap protects the hair as there are chemicals like chlorine, alam etc. which are used in the pool to purify it. Make sure you do some exercises before getting into the pool both on the ground and in the water. Have a shower before entering the pool waters and after the swim too. See that if you are a beginner do not venture to the deep side of the pool.

It may be tempting but will be a risk to ones life if he is not a good swimmer. One more thing is if you go were there are too many people in the pool chances of you bumping into the other and getting injured also increase, so be careful of that.  Do not immediately come out of the water or get into the pool as the body needs some time to adjust to the same. Enter the same legs first followed by the body.

The coaches or the life guard may be too involved in managing the crowd and sometimes people drown and the body will be fished only after a long time leading to the death of the individual. Inform the coach and keep in contact with him when you swim as they will keep an eye on you. This is important for all. Behave responsible in the waters and try to stay safe. Do not go to places where the water of the pool is green in color and has algae in it. You may end up getting rashes. Sometimes the water stinks too.

There are other places like ponds and wells which are there in towns. Here children especially tend to swim without any supervision. These places are generally wells used for common purposes or agricultural purposes. While in the case of ponds they are small deep pits which have been dug by the farmers as a water harvesting method and are also used for bathing cattle, washing  clothes, and watering the fields. Children find this very inviting and try to cool themselves with a swim which in many cases turns out to be fatal. As the depth of these water bodies is around 15 to 20 feet at all the places. Some children do not know how to swim and they tend to drown straight away. While some others who know swimming do get tired after certain period of time and suddenly drown as they panic as they are unable to reach the shore. The other children sometimes die in the process of saving the drowning one. Here all of them are not good swimmers and there is no one in such places. By the time these children alert someone it is too late. Avoid swimming in such places as there are aquatic creatures like leeches, snakes, certain kinds of fish which bite and certain kinds of frogs too which are poisonous.

One more place where youngsters and children try to swim is in water bodies which are like lakes. There are many dangers involved in these places. There are aquatic life which can cause harm and kill the individual as mentioned above. Here one more way in which people lose their lives is due to the marsh which they get stuck in. The problem is it looks fine from the top but once a individual is a few meters inside such a place he suddenly begins to sink in the clay sand and it is difficult for others to come to his rescue and death occurs due to panic or suffocation.

Deaths also occur due to rocks which are there in the water which one does not know are sharp, another problem which causes death is the water plants like hyacinth, lotus, algae and roots of marshy plants etc. Here the death occurs as the swimmers legs get entangled in the roots or the branches inside the water. Water is muddy and hence one cannot view what is there inside. Here death occurs even for the experienced swimmers as coming out of the trap one is stuck is taxing and saps one of the energy. In all these places and situations there is no one to help generally for miles. Or even if someone is there they are not experienced divers who can rescue such people. Avoid swimming in these sort of water bodies however inviting they may be. I am telling this from personal experience.

We all like rivers and would like to bath in the same and also swim if possible. As the atmosphere there is present. Generally in India if some religious festival is there where there is a ritual of bathing in a river involved. The place is sanitized, ropes tied, buoy’s placed and steps build on the ghats for this purpose and this is done for many kilometers and millions of people participate in the festival. There are boats patrolling too and there are expert divers from the navy who are there. Despite this sometimes deaths take place unfortunately due to overcrowding but the same is also being regulated and managed well now. But there are some devotees who would not like to take a bath in a crowd or would want to bath in a point where it is near to their place. Here there are no safety measures and there is no one around and deaths occur in such places as it is too deep. There is no shore and it is just the river flowing. This has to be avoided to save lives. Some times during the rains or during monsoon water is released from dams and the current of the river is fast and more water flows. The people who will be using the river for a bath daily will not be aware of these changes and drowning takes places. Care has to be taken in these sort of situations not to enter waters of rivers in spate.

Some seas are shallow and are pleasant at some beaches  while at other places after a few feet it is a deep. Someone new is totally unaware of this and goes and lands in trouble as he thinks the shoreline is the same as in the other places where he has visited. The waves too are more powerful and pull the person on the shoreline inside the sea or the ocean. These people do not know swimming or even if they know they do not know how to swim in a sea or ocean which is a totally different cup of tea. Many experienced swimmers themselves will never venture there unless safety measures are in place. There is also no bill board cautioning people of the risks. Many drown at such places. One member tries to save another and does not know swimming in such water bodies and many of the family die the process.

In some cases in rivers and lakes there  are crocodiles and people do not have any knowledge about this as they are traveler’s who are on their way from one place to another and this water body which is very scenic happens to fall  on the way. Villagers are aware hence do not venture there. These people who try to get into the water which look very appealing and serene face a very gruesome and unfortunate death. Which could have been totally avoided had they been cautious and taken precautions.

As I write this article many such incidents will be taking places in different parts of the world. My only request to people who read this article is to share this with friends and create awareness about these water bodies and how one should be careful about the risks involved as caution is what can save lives and each life is precious and needs to be saved.

    • that is write nicely, lots of information that some people do not knwo about it, I agree of course and the place that you go to not about the swimming pool i talk but also like if its cheap club or known brand, as cheap places are going to do bad things and not clean the water well also that is so dangerous as the signs and symptoms are not clear fast and it will take time until that time , you will forget or dont really know the reason why you are sick, and small sick leads to bigger one, that is why i like to go gyms or clubs or sea but not pools unless the palce that is im going to is very good and well know for its clean and reputations also absolutely
