Movie Nostalgia: Aakhri Rasta: AB starrer 1986 Bollywood Movie

From Mid-1970s to the early part of 1980s, there was one person who ruled the world of Hindi Cinema- also called as Bollywood. This was the larger than life Amitabh Bacchan. He gave hits after hits, either in solo movies, or in multi-starrers.
Yet sometime in 1982(or was it 1983, I am not very sure), he had an accident on the sets of a movie Coolie- when a punch during a stunt scene shoot from a martial arts experts actor accidentally caused him some serious problem and he had to be hospitalized.
He was out of action for long time. Then, he joined politics as a member of Congress party and in between, some of his movies did not do as well as his older movies.
Then in 1986, a movie came which saw him in a double role.
Interestingly, he played the role of the father in the double role with such conviction and control, that till date this is considered to be one of his best acting performances in his overall career.

Movie Plot in brief

Mary D’Costa(Jayaprada), wife of David D’Costa (Amitabh Bachchan)is terribly wronged and raped by a politician Chaturvedi(Sadashiv Amrapurkar), whom David almost worships as a God.
Mary commits suicide and blames Chaturvedi in her suicide note.
This happened when David was away in Jail and when he comes out, he is very very upset.
However, when he goes to confront Chaturvedi, he is trapped by Police Inspector Roop Kumar Sahay (Dalip Tahil) and Dr. Verma (Bharat Kapoor). The evidence that he has is destroyed, and he is sentenced to 24 years in prison for Mary’s murder.
David asks his friend Mahesh to look after James when he is in jail.

However, when David comes back, he is shocked to see a wealthy and much more greedier Mahesh, who asks David to forget about the people responsible for his wife’s death.
David’s son James(double role – a younger Amitabh) is now in police.
David now has only aim in his life- to avenge his wife’s death at an cost.
He sets a trap, with arms and one by one eliminates all the three responsible persons.
The only obstacle in his path is his own son, but he does not lets his son stop him from his mission.

David dies, and James at first is upset for not being able to prevent his father from not following the course of law, but in the end scene he claps when he realizes that even in an illegal way, his father had completed his mission in a breathtaking manner.

Some personal observations

Amitabh Bacchan has worked on many movies that have entertained, and he has been a great actor too. However, this movie of his has been one where his acting overshadowed the story plot and other actors- even accomplished actors like Anupam Kher.
The way he avenges his wife’s death has sequences that are gripping and holds the viewers’ interest.
A one time watch for sure movie.
