Be Your Own Best Friend

I signed up to this free interview series, which is hosted by Kate Crow. She has interviewed over 20 experts, and there are lessons in abundance, wellness and happiness. What I like about these interviews is that, each interview is about 15 minutes only. It’s great to listen to a short interview and we might really learn something important to our life, or we might get inspired too.

I just received and listened to the first interview. The interviewee is Louisa Jewell. I have not heard about her before, but it doesn’t stop me to listen to the interview and learn something good from her.

What I learned from the interview:

1. According to PsychCentral, when people ruminate, they over-think or obsess about situations of life events, such as work or relationships.

This is the first time I heard about this term, and Louisa considered herself an ruminator, and she has changed. In this interview, she shared some ideas on how she has changed.

2. What made her change was that she suddenly realized that she would not allow others to talk to her the way she talked to herself, so she decided to make a change. Instead of letting a bully stay in her mind, she chose a loving best friend. Her best friend has always been talking nice to her, and she has stopped ruminating.

3. There are three elements to practice self compassion:

1) When things go wrong, the first step is to recognize or be aware of it. Even though we can’t make ourselves feel better at the moment, we should still take good care of ourselves, we should sleep well, eat well or exercise every day. It’s okay to allow ourselves to feel sad and to cry. These are something needed to be done, but we need to remember about self care.

2) Make a choice to allow your best friend to stay in your mind, or be your own best friend. Your best friend in your mind will always encourage you, she will not be harsh on you, and she is following you all day long.

3) Accept it! Accept that it is life, and nobody is perfect. If worrying helps to think of a better solution, then it’s fine. But sometimes when something is really out of our control, worrying doesn’t help at all, we just have to accept it and understand that this is just temporary, this will just pass. Since we have no control over it, we should just let it go.

Louisa Jewell also shares a free gift with us, it’s her ebook “The Rumination Cure“. You can get the free ebook here.

I think I have already passed the stage of being ruminated, though I used to worry sometimes especially when I was at work, I do not worry much now. Now, I believe everything happens for a reason, no matter what has happened, there must be a lesson for me. It’s helping me to learn and grow.  Anyway, it’s still good to get some reminders from the interview.

I am looking forward for the next interview, and see what I will be inspired and learning from the interviewee. I hope I will share with you again.

    • Great article. I definitely ruminate way too much for my own good. I am always over thinking situations that have happened and also going through scenarios of situations that could happen. This series sounds very interesting. Thank you for sharing it all with us. I will have to check it out soon.

    • Oh, I just read this now, thank you sis for telling me about this. I am on my way to listen to the interview. Thank you sis.

    • Thank you for sharing these great insights with us. I will definitely check out the links you have shared. We often fail to recognize the importance of self-compassion.

    • These people actually tech you not how to cope with injustice put upon you, but how to forget and be ripen again for more injustice. Let's say you were attacked, brutally beaten up and raped. How about that somebody comes and says to you -accept it, everything happens to a reason, make this a lesson, and then you just have to forget all that and be your own best friend by accepting this deception how wrong you were about everything and how you can calm yourself...
Is that what you are saying? Would you accept it as a lesson that you have to be more of.. I don't know what ... or seek justice and report an attacker?
I just want to hear how you are going to apply that philosophy on this case, because I saw it happening in reality to a girl who attended my school and she even committed a suicide.

    • In my younger days or teenage years, I always participating in a discussion of any form or any subject and I also love to be interviewed for I am at ease in sharing my thoughts and ideas to a question being raised to me. But I find it no longer feasible in my present age. There are times that I couldn't hear the things said right.

So instead of joining those sessions in varied interviews and discussions, I just participate in writing activities like this one.

    • We should love ourselves and those things that will alter our peace should either be avoided or we should spent less time on it. Life passes us by and we should be kind to ourselves and encourage ourselves. What we think certainly affects us.

    • When I had encountered so many betrayals from the people whom I thought will not hurt me, I started to ruminate. Into some extent, it became overrated behavior. It is a blow by blow of betrayals. With such bad experiences, I learned to step down a bit and do some reflections of oneself.

Along the journey of my existences, I learned to love myself. It is the basic way to do. If you know how to love yourself, then you are ready to share it with others. For some psychological expert, if you know how to take good care of plants or pets, then you know the responsibility to love somebody. It is a matter of having the realization facts about life.

    • This is so true. I like watching such programmes that will teach me various things about real life, because this are things that happen everyday and knowing one or two things about life can be a very good experience. I used to be a victim of worry all th3 time when I was growing up always thinking about what others will say. But as I read my bible listened to sermons especially by Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer I have heard a change of attitude. When you worry it's not a guarantee that you are going to rid yourself off that worry, you might just be preoccupying yourself with headaches all the time for something that was already been predestined by God. When we understand that God is the one who holds our life together and that he knows at one point in life that something is going to happen, just relax and I ow that he is in control. It may sound or look hard to handle but that's just the way it is.
