The Key West Lighthouse is located in the southernmost portion of Florida, in a town called Key West, on Whitehead Street.
I’ve visited Key West Lighthouse on several occasions. A few times were when we took a cruise to Key West. Every time I go, I enjoy visiting the lighthouse. I’ve also visited the Key West Cemetery, and Robert the Doll at the Fort Museum, but the lighthouse is always my favorite thing to see during our visits.
Key West Lighthouse was first lit, back in 1849. However, it didn’t become automated until 1915. I’ve been reading back up on this lighthouse, and it’s indicated that it was deactivated in 1969, however, I could have sworn that we see it lighting up, every time we pass the Florida Straits, when we cruise there. Now it’s making me wonder what it is that we see blinking every time we go past Key West. The lighthouse is 86 feet tall, and it’s 88 steps to the top. I climbed this lighthouse, and even though I have a fear of heights, I always manage to climb the lighthouses that I visit.
If you happen to visit this lighthouse on a cruise ship when you visit Key West, if you climb the lighthouse to the top, you can see your cruise ship from the top view of the light.
The lighthouse is kept very clean, and there is a museum on the premises that is interesting, and has a lot of history about the lighthouse inside. The lighthouse is very well maintained. There was a cat on the premises that I was told had been there a very long time.
If we go back to Key West, I’m going to make sure I visit this lighthouse again and again. Every time we visit the lighthouse when we get the opportunity to go to Key West, it always makes for a very interesting day.

Funny how you live close to a place and have access to major tourist attractions but you never visit them. When we lived in Florida we could easily drive to Key West for the weekend and we never visited the Lighthouse. :) Glad you had fun!
I know exactly what you mean. We lived up north practically most of our life, and before we moved south, we spent weeks visiting places we hadn't visit before. lol I just knew that once I moved south, I was never planning on going back up north again.
This is one of the best kept lighthouses in the U.S. It's always clean and well taken care of any time we visit it.
