Getting rid of your Relatives

I read, with some shock, about the prevalence of  ‘Granny Dumping’.   This is the disposal of older relatives, many with Alzheimer’s disease by their children or grandchildren.

By dumping, it is that the children or grandchildren just leave the unwanted parent or grandparent somewhere; on the street, in a bus station; there is even a recent case in which the son took his father to England, and left them there, and went back to America.

This practice is well known in the United States, in England, in Japan, Australia, everywhere.  It’s also known in Jamaica.

One will find many old people alone on the road, left in some home, left to die.

One of the most famous cases in Jamaica was when a guy married his second wife, and tossed his parents out of their home, into a nursing home, because his new wife wanted the house.

He was deep in his forties, she was in her twenties.   She wanted to live in the fancy house on the hill.  The house his parents had bought and paid for, the house in which he grew up.

As wifey wanted the house, he had to get his parents out.  He wasn’t fussy about the home he tossed them into, just to toss them.

So he put them in this home,  there was a fire, they burnt to death.  When he found out, he was upset. His wife said something provocative to him.  He slapped her, she had him locked up, got a restraining order, a divorce, and the house.

The lack of duty, responsibility, even love, which allows children and grand children to dispose of their parents as rubbish has swept the world.

Few nations are implementing policies.   Few are coming to grips with the fact that the lack of discipline in a family leads to a sense of singularity where the child feels no sense of responsibility for their parents.

The need to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease might alleviate the problem.

    • Actually, it is becoming trendy. This situation is being practiced in other countries. For Asian people like me, we can't do that to our elders. With the exemption of abandoning the elders secondary to poverty reason. But then, the immediate family should take good care of their elders. It is a culture that Asian people proud of.

In my own opinion, if the elders were being dumped into an institution. It shows how ungrateful to them.If we are going to think it over, our elders had done all the sacrifices for us to survive in this world. Now that they are in an aging process, we need to return back all the blessings to them. It is a cycle of life. Things can be done all over again if we are also in senility stage.

    • Sad that some people have no conscience in doing that to their parents. How were they able to sleep peacefully, when they know that the very parents who loved and took care of them and gave them education, were put in a place where they cannot be disturbed.

Good thing, here in the Philippines, majority of the old people are being taken cared of their children until their death. The children loves their parents that's why.
