There are many minority groups have spread all over the world. The Hispanic population is one of them. They are also known as Latino group, the largest minority group in the United States.
The term “Hispanic” and “Latino” are not the same. The Hispanic refers a group that’s primary language is Spanish, and Latino refers people having Latin as their principal language. The group comprises Mexican descents, South American, Cuban, Central American and other Hispanic descent. As a result of several biological attributes, the people of this group are tended to get have type 2 diabetes. The unhealthy lifestyles and poor diet increase the risk factor of the disease. Amongst them, the propensity of being affected in type 2 diabetes is higher in Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans than Cubans. Though the genes play the key role for being affected by type 2 diabetes, yet there should be treatments to get the patient out of the risk. The awareness of the disease should be spread among them. Only by treatment and the awareness, we can be able to get them well.
There is a concept named familismo. The concept is, giving more importance to the extended family rather than the needs of the individual. They have a strong belief in God. They think only God can cure their disease. This mental positivity can be a remedy for their disease. This religious belief supports their immune system to cope with the disease. Thus their culture and belief affect their disease.
But, the Hispano culture has another negative influence too to increase the risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Unhealthy diets, fatty and high calories foods, over exercises exceed the risk factor of type 2 diabetes. Lack of nutrition is responsible for the disease. Correct nutrition is needed to sustain a healthy life. Traditional foods of Hispanic or Latinos are high in spice and unhealthy fat. A study showed that non-Hispanics/ Latinos consume more carbohydrate and saturated fat than the non-Hispanics. A fear of the disease can provide a negative impact on their health and make the condition worse. They believe that insulin is a cause of blindness. They also have a belief that type 2 diabetes can lead them to death. They think the common causes of diabetes are heredity, diet high in fat and sugar, no or very less body movement, being overweight and so long. Poor education and less knowledge make them fear about the disease. Fear leads Hispanics to rise the risk factor of type 2 diabetes.
Only the awareness and proper education can control the situation. Poverty also plays a vital role. Although a genetic influence is a principal cause of being affected in type 2 diabetes. Familismo, fatalismo, personalismo may control their health issue. We should take responsibilities to extend awareness among them to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our responsibility is to make a clear communication between the Hispanic patients and health care providers, to make them understand the root causes of type 2 diabetes. Social acceptance is also necessary to treat their condition. Another most important thing is education. Providing proper education would make them susceptible to live a healthy lifestyle, and It is education that can lead them to choose a right path to combat with type 2 diabetes by knowing the underlying causes of it.

When proper care is not taken some of the patients suffering from type2 Diabetes may move away from the Hispanic group permanently leaving the impression that it is only the God and not the human medicine that can cure any disease. Thus the concept of Familismo will gain more ground in the group. It is for the Health providers who should up confidence among this group and educate them.
They should develop effective communication with the Hispanic group and build up confidence in them. They should be educated to adopt a healthy lifestyle. They should be made to understand the causes of this deadly disease
