Our Beautiful Cinnamon Tree a Haven for Birds

We planned our garden with birds in mind. Whatever that is planted is now fully grown and yielding. We have several fruit trees and it is a joy to see so many birds visiting our garden and enjoying  the fruits of our labour. Besides fruit trees we also have a few others like the ever blooming bottle brush tree. We also  have a cinnamon tree   – a haven for birds. The small leaves hide the nests that birds build on this tree. The crown of this tree is also a haven for squirrels that run around and play on this tree.

Around Christmas time it gives out flowers that almost cover the leaves. The flowers have a strong smell that lasts for days. The entire garden gets its aroma. The flowers are white in  colour that almost blend with the sky above.

Gradually these flowers mature and we see countless fruits. It is not a happy situation  when the fruits drop on the ground that mess up the place. It is indeed a time for more birds to fly up there and enjoy the fruits. The fruits will be strewn all over the place when the birds land on the tree  with their nimble feet and with the first rain there will be saplings all over which we have to pull out and discard. There is no demand for these saplings, sadly.

I have yet to use the bark of the tree which is the main purpose of the tree. The bark has several uses. A lot is being written about the health of cinnamon, although those with kidney ailments are advised against it. I use  cinnamon in many of my dishes including the date and walnut cake. I buy cinnamon sticks from the market. Hope to scrape it out from my own tree. I am sure that which I will get from our own tree would be better than what we get from the market.

    • Cinnamon is wonderful. I especially love it in warm drinks. I'm glad it also has so many health benefits. That's good on top of goodie!! :)

      • As a child the only use I knew was when mother made her Pork Bafat which had cinnamon sticks and also leaves in it.

      he spice is actually obtained from the inner bark of the cinnamon tree. The bark is stripped from the tree and allowed to dry in the sun. Whilst drying, it rolls up into a quill and this is what we know as a cinnamon stick. Some of the quills are then ground down into a power and this is what we know as ground cinnamon.

      Cinnamon was one of the first spices to be traded between Asia and Europe and the fact that Venetian merchants controlled the entire cinnamon trade in Europe fuelled other European explorers to travel afar in search of other ways of obtaining the precious spice.

    • You are so lucky to have your own cinnamon tree. I haven't seen one, until you posted it.We buy cinnamon powder from groceries. It is not grown here in our country.
