The Joy of Just Being Nice

My friend K said that people have told her she is ‘too nice’ and should stop.  She said she can’t change.

I told her, don’t think about changing.

My mother always said;  “It is just as easy to be nasty as it is to be nice.  So be nice. You can always be nasty.”

Over my life I have been ‘nice’.   I have been nice to everyone.  I can always be nasty if it doesn’t work.

Because I am usually nice, people are nice to me.  They may be the worst people in the country, but they are nice to me.

Over the years when I’ve spoken about people or a place, I add;  “Well, they are very nice to me…”

This allows others to vent, sure, but having ‘modified’ my observation/experience it isn’t as…”You think Dirty Johnny is Nice!”   or, “What the *&^%* did you say?”

K and I are the kind of people who walk into a place and smile and greet everyone and listen when people talk to us and try to make everything happy and light and fun and well… nice.

We are probably Aliens who were deposited on Earth as children or something, because we are kind of ‘freaks’.

We usually smile, we are usually happy, and no matter how terrible our day we can find the funny parts in it, and don’t let the worst things get into our souls.

I have found, for example, at the supermarket, no one ever objects to me wanting to have the packaging torn and only one or two items selected.  If I can’t find something, someone will go into the back to see if it is there.

No one ever refuses, everyone tries to be nice to me.    When I am in a place and am having difficulty in getting service, I usually walk out.  When one person ignores me I usually find another.

If there is a disaster I’m not complaining, I’m finding the funny parts.   In most cases, when people try to pick a fight with me, I decline by not answering.

K is very much like me.  She always keeps her word, always tries to do her best, is always friendly and polite, and even when she has to ‘slap’ someone down she does it in an effective but non-aggressive manner.

We seem to go through life easier than others.  We get good service where ever we go, and people always try to assist.

That’s the pay back of just being nice.

    • yes the joy of just being is limitless on earth and in heaven those who nice are loved very where on earth. If you are nice to a dog or an cat or to any other animal he or she will be your fast friend looking at this people will wonder.

I think e must be nice o everyone living among the people, beasts and birds. I have see many people have tamed animals as lions, and snakes,...the owner is nice to them the beast is nice to the owner.

Give love and take love works on earth but those who give hate receive hate in exchange is wonderful law. Tame dog it will be your best friend at home and out of home. It will save you from enemies while walking and attacking at home and on the road.

    • It is better to be nice than being rude to others. There are times that people forget this simple word.I think some people who are in politics need to be nice. The reason, they wanted to gain followers. All the promises had been laid down during the campaign prior to a national election. Some people will be rude enough especially if they have the power. It is sad to say this. This situation is happening in my country at this moment. The power drains their total being and its morality in the public.

    • Being ni e to people is the best thing that you could do for yourself. It doesn't cost you anything it just brings blessings. But again being too nice is another story, people will take you for granted when you are too nice. There are people who are usually just cut out for doing such things, they don't really care whether they are hurting someone else or not. I used to be a victim some time back, I used to be so nice to people. Ever accommodating, regardless of whether you are my relative or not. But one day i really thought about my goodness and kindness towards people and to be honest I didn't like it. It is at that time that I realized how so many people toil advantage of my being nice. I had to tone it down for my own good. Have you ever taken someone in, took care of them, shared your good with them and all that? Then the same people decide to show you attitude. I can remember there if my friends who did that to me after all I had done for them. But I let it slide and decided am not going to kick them away from my list of friends coz that wouldn't change anything. So be nice but not too nice

      • K and I had the same discussion last week. I am NOT going to let other people set my agenda. I am going to be nice and smile, and when, (not if) someone tries to take advantage, I just remove myself.

There's a worker who begged me some money and I gave it to her. She now wants to be every week. Well... I come late now so she can't get me alone.

    • To tell someone that they are “too nice” has got to be the best compliment I've ever heard! :)

    • it is a delight with being or working with someone who is nice.I think if everyone was nice the world would be a beter place. No more wars or poverty just peacefull co-existence. But to bad the world isn't like that so being to nice can get you shamed out of your money or just taken advantage off. Which is awfull and affect your belief in mankind, truly saddening.

      • As I mentioned in response; there's a person, 'L' who wants to take advantage. So... my strategy? I come late and she can't get me alone, she'd have to come right out in front of everyone and beg me money. She won't.

    • Being nice is to tolerate others and tolerate means letting others be nasty  Should we tolerate is the question I have always asked.

      • The exact thing happened. I looked at the other person who had been nasty. Blinked my eyes. Walked Away.

    • I wish we could teach these younger adults who are parents the importance of always trying to be nice first. It seems even with my own adult children, that if something does not go the way they think it should, there first reaction is to always get mad. I try to tell them that there is almost always anther solution to whatever it is that causes them anger & usually the situation works outs better than the original plan. It seems like they burn way too much energy being mad first.

      • I was lucky, my 'baby' knows how to look at someone, give them a brilliant smile, and just stand there. She's better than I am at it.
