Book Review: The Cuckoo’s Calling, by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling)

My first thought after reading the book, The Cuckoo’s Calling was: Why didn’t I read it before and my second thought was: I have to go and buy the next one NOW!

J.K Rowling will forever be associated with Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived and his epic struggle against Lord Voldemort, He Who Must Not Be Named. I guess that is why she chose to create the character Detective Cormoran Strike under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

I love reading murder mysteries and I feel British writers excel in this genre far more than their American counterparts. The book is about a super model Lula Landry who falls from her balcony and dies at the peak of her career. Her adopted brother wants her death investigated when the police think it is a case of drug-fuelled suicide.

Although vastly different from Harry Potter books in term of plot and genre, there are a few similarities. Harry Potter had a scar on his forehead; Cormoran Strike has an artificial leg after serving in Afghanistan. Hagrid in Harry Potter series was big and hairy and so is this detective.

In Harry Potter series, it was Hermione who was clever and very adept at finding answers from the books in library. In The Cuckoo’s Calling,  it is Robin who is very efficient and good at finding facts from Google. Paparazzi existed in form of Reeta Skeeter in the wizarding world, here again they are shown as vultures that follow every aspect of celebrities with cameras in their hands.

The book The Cuckoo’s Calling shows that J.K Rowling has not lost any of her formidable storytelling talent. Both Detective Cormoran Strike and his efficient secretary Robin Ellacott. are characters that will captivate you and make you want to know more about their history and their current life and care about their future.

During the course of investigation we get a peep into the horribly messed up lives of lawyers, fashion models, film producers, fashion designers, rock stars….professions which seem very glamorous from outside but are rotten to the core inside.

Two more Cormoran Strike novels have already been published and many more are planned. The books will also be adapted into detective series by BBC. I found The Cuckoo’s Calling a very enjoyable crime novel and can’t wait to start the next one titled, The Silkworm.

Definitely something to check out!
