Another Italian Place to Visit in Dublin: Paulie’s Pizza

A friend from California arrived a couple of weeks ago to visit. On that day, it was a gloriously hot day in Dublin and I can truly feel that summer is here in our midst. We went out to go to the zoo and spent the afternoon in a park just to chat. When my son took his nap, we went home but planned to go out for dinner. We thought that it would be nice to go outdoors to have a meal instead of staying in our apartment. And for that, my husband booked a place at a nearby pizza place called Paulie’s Pizza.

Paulie’s Pizza Review

In my opinion, Paulie’s and Manifesto are almost the same when it comes to quality and authenticity. It just so happens that our Napolitan friends prefer Manifesto because the pizza dough is similar to how it’s made in Napoli. We recently visited Manifesto and since it’s been a while since I’ve been in Paulie’s (and it is closer to our place, too), we decided to have dinner there with our friend.

My husband made reservations because we are aware that seats are very limited. We made the right decision as the place is packed with people when we arrived. Unfortunately for us, our table is placed just behind the windows. It might’ve been a good spot if not for the scorching hot sun coming through the window glass and the lack of wind coming in. Despite the inconvenience, we can’t request to change tables since there’s no vacant table around. Well, suck it up, I guess.

A staff approached us shortly to get our order and despite being really busy, he was really gracious to accommodate us. He was pleasant to talk with and listened attentively to our orders. Shortly after getting our orders, he came back with our chilled bottle of wine and glasses of water for the table.

We decided to share our mains but ordered separately for our starters. To start, I decided to order a “salad” with burrata. Burrata is almost similar to a buffalo mozzarella but creamier and softer in texture. Our Italian friends told me that burrata is like a “pre-mozzarella” cheese that’s why it is almost similar, but not quite. My order arrived and was so happy the burrata portion was generous. The ratio of the greens and parma ham was also sufficient so it was enough for everybody to have a taste, too.

For our mains, we decided to order a pizza and pasta dish. We ordered a crab meat pasta and for the pizza, we decided to go for the “pizza of the day” called Mimi. It was great we went for this as we were quite full from the generous portions from our starters. The pasta was filled with shredded crab meat and well-seasoned. The pizza was also really tasty – I really like the sausage meat used for it.

My son had his own tomato-based spaghetti that he ate with glee. The “kid’s” portion was also big we ended up having the leftover for takeaway.

Of course, our meal ended with a sweet note. We were full so we decided to share our desserts. Since we didn’t want to order a rich dessert, we decided to go for a pannacotta instead.

Overall, it was a superb dining experience. The food was great, staff was attentive, and our meals served on time. Apart from the really hot weather that day, I can’t complain anything else!

    • I am more into prompt service than being satisfied with what I eat. Places such as these always have good food. I remember the long queue at a hotel in New York.

      • Now that I think about it, it is the staff's attention to detail that lingers long after you have dined in a restaurant. Of course, food quality is also a factor to remember a "good" restaurant. But there are times when a bad customer service experience ruins the entire dining experience no matter how fantastic the food is.

    • Sounds pretty good. Although the sun was beaming. It still sounds as if then meal was enjoyed and that's a plus. Italian food is great. I'm glad the food was tasty. The restaurant sounds like a great place to hang out.

      • Yeah it is a great place to catch up with place. In fact, most of the diners are quite young probably because there are lots of HQs around the area so there were a lot of young office workers, too.

      • Thanks for the feedback. :) I really try to be as honest as possible when I review anything. I mean, I also rely on reviews to know whether the product or restaurant is something I'd like so I want to do the same thing, too.

    • sounds like a very nice restaurant to visit for 3-4 person and the share of food serve, I hate to admit this, from the picture, it is enough for 2 person only, me and my hubby are big eaters, we could finish off the plate in just 10 minutes!

      As for the dessert, it looked delicious, pity that it is only one piece , that is sufficient for my son but not me and hubby, LOL

      • Oh, I didn't take the other starters ordered by my husband and my friend visiting us :) So apart from the Burrata salad, we had individual plates as an appetizer. That filled us up since my friend ordered a calamari and my husband ordered mussels. That's why we decided to order "light" for the mains since we don't want to take a lot home.

    • Yes Italian foods are famous all over the world especially Italian pizza at every restaurant gig or small. My friend lived there he praised more of Italian pizza,

      A legend suggests that Roman soldiers gained a taste for Jewish Matzoth while stationed in Roman occupied Palestine and developed a similar food after returning home. However a recent archeological discovery has found a preserved Bronze Age pizza in the Veneto region. By the Middle Ages, these early pizzas started to take on a more modern look and taste.

      The peasantry of the time used what few ingredients they could get their hands on to produce the modern pizza dough and topped it with olive oil and herbs. The introduction of the Indian Water Buffalo gave pizza another dimension with the production of mozzarella cheese. Even today, the use of fresh mozzarella di buffalo in Italian pizza cannot be substituted. While other cheeses have made their way onto pizza (usually in conjunction with fresh mozzarella), no Italian Pizzeria would ever use the dried shredded type used on so many American pizzas.

      In America pizza usually falls into two categories: thick and cheesy Chicago style or thin and more traditional New York pizza. In Italy pizza also falls into two distinct categories: Italian pizza and the rest of the world. It might seem silly considering the basic ingredients, but one taste of a true Italian pizza and that's it. You will never feel the same about this simple and delicious food again.
