I am still breastfeeding my son and when I look back, I think it wouldn’t have been possible if not for a couple of items I used as I go through this journey. Similar to any new Moms, the first days and weeks of breastfeeding my son were painful and difficult. I guess fellow Moms like me will relate to experiencing bloodied nipples as a result of baby’s poor latching – ouch!
I was one of those mothers who struggled to breastfeed initially. I also experienced sore and wounded nipples as a result of my son finding it difficult to latch initially. I remembered crying in agony and almost giving up just thinking of the next breastfeeding session. I was truly on the verge of giving up.
Luckily, a public health nurse arrived to check on us and told her about my struggles to feed. I also told her about my cracked nipples and asked what product I can use to heal them. When I asked her that, she recommended Lansinoh Lanolin. She said that I can use it as often as I want and there is no need to wash off before feeding the baby. Immediately, I asked my husband to go to the nearest pharmacy to buy a tube.
The packaging is really nice and made from soft, squeezable tube. It is quite easy to get the product out of the tube, but may be a bit of a struggle during the cold months of winter. I find the texture a lot similar to Vaseline but a lot thicker. I apply the product by squeezing just a teeny-tiny portion to treat my cracked nipples. I usually do so after taking a bath and re-apply every time I feel pain.
The product works by applying moisture to the cracked area. Similar to chapped lips, the cause why cracked nipples occur is due to the friction caused by the baby’s constantly sucking on it to get milk making the area dry and dehydrated.
It was as if this product is such a blessing. Only after using for a couple of days, my cracked nipples improved and healed – even if I was feeding my son round-the-clock. The thick Vaseline-like cream is really effective to lock in the moisture around that area and prevent from drying.
The tube lasts a long time, too. As a matter of fact, I didn’t finish the tube my husband bought for me! It could be that I stopped applying the product when my wounds heal and only re-apply whenever I feel it is starting to get sore to avoid getting cracked again.
Overall, I am really happy with the product and thankful that the public health nurse recommended this to me. It’s been a while since I used it for myself but found it was also effective when my son has chapped lips from the dry wind! My son and I didn’t experience any allergic reactions whenever we use it, too.

Good that you have found a product that helps. I can understand how painful it is. I did not try any products, as a friend recommended me to soak the nipple in the salt water, it helped to relieve some pain. I also read that using the breast milk to apply on the nipple will help too. Of course, using these natural methods are not as efficient as using those commercial products.
I am glad the pain has over for the first two children, but now have to get ready for the pain for this baby soon. :D
I actually used the "natural remedies" first like using my own milk and air drying every feeding session but it was too much - my son can drink my blood (literally) every feeding. I can see some hint of red with the breastmilk when he tries to latch and maybe he doesn't like the taste so he stops feeding on the cracked breast. I guess it is nice to find natural remedies first because it is natural and free (most of the times) but when we need to speed up the healing process, we can always turn to safe commercially-made products.
Oh, and hopefully your breastfeeding journey with your next baby won't be as bad!
I loved Lansinoh! I used it for a ton of things, including rough and chapped skin on my hands. I love lanolin, and this formulation is so rich without being greasy or sticky. It's a fabulous product!
Yeah, I didn't know I can use it for chapped skin! That's why I was so surprised to see that I can use it for my son's chapped lips at the time. Well, it makes sense. If he can feed on my breast without me rinsing off the product, it should be safe if I apply on his lips, too :)
