A rare BBQ lunch opportunity: Bison Bar

Bison Bar

It was one of those rare moments when my husband and I get the chance to spend some time just the two of us. I filed for leave that day since we needed to run a few errands and decided to leave my son with the nanny for a couple of hours so we can finish faster without worrying about him getting bored, naptime, and whatnots. As expected, it literally just took us about 20 minutes to finish and we found ourselves having a wee bit of free time in our hands.

Since it was rare for us to find ourselves being just by ourselves, we decided to eat out and go to a place where we’ve been badly craving to dine for some time now: Bison Bar. The only issue with the place is that it seems not child-friendly and there doesn’t seem to be anything on the menu that my son can eat apart from fries.

We’ve tried a lot of BBQ joints around Dublin, but for us, Bison Bar is the best when it comes to grilled meat. And with summer still here (thank God for that!), we need to get our hands and mouth tucked in these yummy grilled meat pieces before summer ends!

Luckily for us, it was a particularly warm day when my husband and I went out. It was just a little over 12 in the afternoon and we were a bit worried it might still be closed. Good thing, they open at 12 and being one of the first customers, it wasn’t too busy yet. We immediately grabbed a seat after a couple of seconds and in no time ordered our drink to start off!

In no time, a staff handed us the menu. My husband seems fixed on what he wants to order but I was still choosing which one to take. There is a nice combo meal platter that comes with two types of grilled meat but I can’t finish it! Luckily, my husband was willing to share his plate with me so I only needed to order the single meat. I mean, I want to try EVERYTHING but my stomach can only handle so much! In the end, I ordered the grilled sausage and my husband ordered the combo platter of brisket and pulled pork. He initially planned to order a rack of ribs but unluckily for him, they still don’t have it. Maybe because we were too early?

Our food arrived within 10-15 minutes of ordering, which is surprisingly fast. I was so excited to tuck in the moment my order arrived. My husband and I shared everything and it was a good decision to do so. The choice of two side dishes was big and the grilled meat pieces were also generous. It was superb, the meat grilled to perfection, didn’t taste burnt, and the fast service was a great experience, too!

I still enjoyed our dining experience at Bison Bar. It may have been years since I last dined there but the quality of food is still the way I remembered it.

    • It sounds like a great restaurant for anyone who loves BBQ! From the name, I thought perhaps they specialized in bison meat. Do they serve it? We have a local place, called Buffalo Trails, that is mostly a cafe but it also serves a few dishes like chili made from bison meat.

      • Oh, I think they don't! I haven't tried eating bison meat but I won't be scared to try anyway. I have tried other meats before like kangaroo, deer, and horse meat. How does bison meat tastes like, by the way?

        • It's very tasty meat, @cessy08. It's a lot like the finer cuts of beef. I've only had it a few different ways. Once we bought bison steaks, and another time a friend used a filet mignon of bison to make fondue meat. Both times it was very tender and flavourful. Other times, it's just been ground bison meat that was added to stews or chilis, which made it difficult to judge the quality or the taste of the meat itself.

          • Wow, just thinking about what you told me just now makes me wonder (and drool) about bison meat! I mean, it is sometimes so surprising to discover tastier (and healthier) meat options apart from the traditional beef, pork and chicken meat pieces we have grown so accustomed to.

    • Yes, very bison meat in eating my friends told me who lived in Germany since 2000 they enjoy the meat twice in a week. We've returned time and time again to this restaurant during our visits to Dublin. It's a small pub with cool decor and tasty street food. From pulled pork to beef brisket to ribs - it's all delicious and for a really good price! The staff is always nice and the service is good. They have really cheap lunch and dinner

My friends told me thus that Seriously, the onion rings are magic. They are unlike any onion rings I've ever had. And the brisket, the ribs, the chicken, the pulled pork, lordy lord, we had a platter from meat heaven. The platters for a group are massive. Seriously, if your going our for pints in Dublin with a group, go here. You won't regret it.

We were there at lunchtime on a Monday to celebrate my husband's bday. As he is a meat lover I decided to bring him to Bison. When we arrived nobody came to greet us or even come to the table to take our orders. So I went to the counter to order as we didn't know what to do
