7 Reasons why laughter is the best medicine

Now you have more reasons to laugh. What are they? Read on. We have all heard the phrase, ‘laughter is the best medicine’, but do not know what the arguments are for it. That is why here are the seven reasons for this well-known saying.  Having an ability to laugh with a good sense of humor can be beneficial for your emotional, mental and physical health.  Who knows, sooner or later, you will want to start laughing more and more.

1. Laughing strengthens the immune system:

Stressful experiences in everyday life suppress the immune system. And this increases the risk of diseases and heart ailments. Having a good sense of humor prevents stress that affects the immune system and protects you from diseases.

2. Laughter is linked to healthy function of blood vessels:

Laughter causes dilation or expansion of increasing blood flow to the tissues. It is known that laughter may be important to maintain healthy endothelial cells and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, as per researchers.

3. Laughter is beneficial to the respiratory system:

Laughter is an easy and healthy method that helps regulate breathing and oxygenate the lungs. When you laugh you can breathe deeper and improve your respiratory health. In fact, it is so effective that there are therapies like laughter yoga. These types of laughter yoga recharge the body and control the mental state by regulating the flow of the life force, inducing calm and energy.

4. Laughter reduces the levels of anxiety and stress

Humor is very good at times of difficulties when we have to deal with stressful situations. It promotes a positive mood and helps wipe out the negative thoughts and emotions. It also helps us to see the funny side of the things in adverse situations. Laughter is also contagious, so why not help yourself to improve the mood by sharing a laugh with your friends and others?

5. Laughter makes you more attractive:

Studies show that people think that men and women with a good sense of humor are more attractive. A sense of humor makes you feel more comfortable with whom you associate yourself with. On the other hand, if you show a sense of humor in a job interview, it will increase your chances of being hired.

6. Laughter plays an important role in social interaction:

Laughter plays an important role in discussions with other people, and also makes it easier to mix freely among different groups of individuals. Having a sense of humor is good for self-esteem and this is reflected well when interacting with your family and friends.

7. Laughter improves emotional health:

Laughter and humor help the brain positively. With laughing, emotional responses are better processed and enhance the experience of pleasure. It also helps to lift the spirits and endorphin that regulate the pain and stress and bring on excitement.  Laughing provoke a joyful state such as listening to music or an experience of dancing. So, what are you waiting for? Do not wait any longer and start laughing a lot.

    • You made me laugh when I read Number 5 because it reminded me of when I was little and my mom always telling me not to frown because my face would stay that way. The thought of my face having a permanent upside down smile was really scary! The thought now also makes me laugh. Laughter is universal. :)

      • Yes. Even my mother used to say that very often. Those were the days we understood less about things said and done. As we grow old, we understand many things. Life is strange is it not?

    • When you think something is funny, you laugh. But do you know why and how you laugh? This part of the lesson addresses the science of laughter in terms of how the brain reacts to an external stimulus that is funny.

First of all, laughter is not the same as humor. Laughter is the physiological response to humor. Laughter consists of two parts -- a set of gestures and the production of a sound. When we laugh, the brain pressures us to conduct both those activities simultaneously. When we laugh heartily, changes occur in many parts of the body, even the arm, leg and trunk muscles.

It is a solid fact that nothing balances your nervous system faster than communicating face-to-face with another person. Add laughter to that communication and you have a powerful antidote to stress, anxiety, pain, and conflict. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert.

With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health.

Laughter triggers the release of endorphins
