Some people are very particular when they are travelling.
They want to stay in 5 stars hotel, and not 4 stars hotel.
I have stayed in anything from motel, budget hotel, apartment, to 5 stars hotel.
If you were to compare the standard of a budget hotel room to the room in 5 stars hotel, there are many differences.
However, when you compare 4 stars hotel with 5 stars hotel, there is not that much difference. At least the difference is not noticeable if you just stay a couple of nights.
The real difference is in the pricing.
That is why I stay in 5 stars hotel only when I travel to China, and when the hotel is having a promotion that includes free breakfast or other services.
China has a lot of 5 stars hotel in very good location.
The best thing is that the hotel is always half full only, and most locals do not stay in the same hotel as you.
So far the best hotel experience I had was in Sichuan province. There was a hotel in one of the cities that had yet to obtain the rating.
I heard that the hotel did get a 5 stars rating a couple of weeks after we left.
Not many people were staying there, because it was a new hotel, and not well known yet.
They had a great promotion. The price was below that of a 3 stars hotel, and the service was very good.
They sincerely cared about the visitors, and wanted to improve on the service.
I think they were fearful that they would not get 5 stars rating. If they got 4 stars rating, they would have to lower their price permanently because the city had a lot of 5 stars hotel, and many more 4 stars hotel.
I see no point in spending more on hotel room in other countries since I will be out most of the times. At least the hotel room in China is very cheap.

I often heard about the hotel's rating you have mentioned, the 4 stars and the 5 stars. Well, I don't know how those hotels are being rated at least those who travel often know the great extent of rating. I only stay in the hotel for an overnight conference or business meeting which usually lasted for 3 days the maximum. And it is usually held in our local place.
Well, for the sake of making a hotel rated as such, the criteria I believe is the price, the amenities offered like foods, hotel room accommodation, transportation service, communications, and the overall management of the hotel as to their employees, staff, cooks, etc.
