4 Tips how to prepare food at home for busy people

Do you agree that home made food is better than dining outside?

Majority agree that homecooked food is better but how many of us have

the time to cook at home ?

Both parents and single adults are seen busy with daily outdoor

activities, busy at work , 5 or 6 days a week, hardly had the time to sit

down to relax, not to mention cooking!

Reasons consumers dine out

According to surveys, many participants complained that they do not:

Have time to cook

Tired to cook after work

Too lazy to cook

Do not know how to cook

Don’t know how to cook

Don’t have enough time to prepare the ingredients before cooking

Hence, majority would choose to enjoy dining out at restaurant, fastfood

restaurants, order take-aways or dine at parents / siblings home instead.

Nobody is complaining about wasting money or time.

It is just tons of excuses to get away from involving oneself in the

kitchen.

Hence, saving money is not the priority.

Convenience and fast are the crucial point working people are looking

for.

However, they do understand that dining out is not 100% healthy at all.

High in calories, cholesterol , sodium and sugar.

Gradually, high risk diseases develop in one’s body as they grow older.

Reasons to cook at home

Save money on food- expensive meal per head

Save parking fee and time to locate parking lot

Save time from the traffic jam at peak hours

Save your health- dining out food prepared-not hygiene , excess seasoning-more sodium and sugar

Increase knowledge to cook simple meals at the shortest time

Increase your family bonding- preparing and cooking meals together

with siblings, parents or spouse

Decrease your weight- less calorie food, maintain ideal weight

There are a few ways where you can cook at home even though you are working full-time or studying full-time at college.

Here are 4 simple steps how to prepare food at home for busy people

#1- Keep large batch of food-

Some recipes could be made before hand and kept in the freezer for

future use.

Marinate chicken, pork, muttons and meat for curries, store in a plastic

container with a tight lid and wrap it up with a zip lock bag.

You can thaw and heat up for a quick dinner.

Muffin is another popular pastry that I used to make a large batch.

I will leave aside one batch as original muffin  (freeze them )and the

other for today baking purpose.

You can sprinkle some chocolate chips, raisins or cherries on top of the

original muffins before you bake them in the oven.

A very convenient way to reheat your food without any preparation

when you are late for dinner or breakfast!

#2 –Buy right cooking appliances-

If cooking up a stew or roasting may takes up a few hours, you might as

well invest a little money on the right cooking appliances to save your

the time for your convenience.

I have a slow cooker at home that makes wonderful warm and nutritious

soup for the whole family.

In the morning, I will prepare the soup ingredients, dump them into the

slow cooker  and let it simmer for the whole day while I am busy with

household chores and writing online.

In addition, I could put my mind at ease even when I am outdoor paying

bills or grocery shopping as the slow cooker uses less power

consumption and does not dries up easily.

A pressure cooker aids in reducing the time required to cook curries,

bak-kut-the (meat bone tea ) and lamb stews.

Normally it takes 4 long hours to cook on a gas stove but with a

pressure cooker, I could whip up a aromatic juicy meals in an hour.

That saves up 3 hours of gas!

Instead of using BBQ grill, buy a toaster oven not microwave oven that

toast your bread nicely and roast your meaty recipes with juicy drips.

It is also convenient to bake cakes, muffins, cookies and defrost frozen

meat in a jiffy.

#3- Cook meals in less than 20 minutes

There are tons of simple , yet quick to cook recipes in less than 20

minutes for the whole family.

Search for meals that require less than 5 ingredients, less preparation

time, less cooking time and if it needs marinating, do it the night before

so that you don’t have to waste time waiting for the meats to marinate

well.

Stir fry vegetable takes around 15 minutes whereas meat stews might

take around 30 minutes to simmer.

Hence, you might as well opt for stir fries recipes and steam recipes

such as fish, minced meat with tofu that takes around 15 minutes.

Teach your teenager or spouse to wash and cook white rice / brown rice

before you reach home. ( Asian families consume rice more than pasta

or spaghetti).

#4- Pasta and pitta ( sandwiches )

If you are lazy to cook after coming back from work, try making quick

pasta dishes with minced meats, pasta sauce in jar and salad leaves .

With just 3 simple ingredients, you can enjoy a healthy meal in the

shortest time, without messing up your kitchen.

Besides that, you could whip up sandwiches or pitta bread with your

favorite toasted ham, cooked turkey or chicken and generous spread of

mayonnaise, mustard or coleslaw spread.

You don’t have to prepare 3-4 dishes in order to have a good meal at

home.

Sometimes, one simple meal with a cup of hot beverage or fruit juice is

sufficient to satisfy your / your family hunger pangs.

Enjoy a fruit (apple, a bunch of grapes, prune or strawberry ) or a cup of

salad after meal is better than snacking a bag of potato chips.

Do you find it easier or troublesome to prepare larger batches of food ?

What food do you prepare more often and freeze it?

What electrical appliances do you have at home?

Do share with me your opinion. I would love to hear from you.

Cheers!!

    • There are some useful tips for cooking at home. As you rightly said that people nowadays are finding it difficult to devote time for cooking for various reasons. Most common reason for not cooking at home is because of tiresomeness and not having a good company to share their work at cooking. The remaining reasons may be specific to a particular family and a member who is cooking for the home.

The tip on how to cook in less than 20 minutes for the entire home is good. The appliances you have mentioned will be quite friendly in cooking. They save time and money also. They also assure some good physical activity.

I want to add that eating in a glassware will save a lot of water as they are easy to wash. We need not use a lot of water in cleaning the dinner and lunch plates. The dinner plates and other serving bowls should be kept clean and should be of good material to avoid the reaction with the food items served.

But, these items should be changed at least once in a year for keeping the kitchen always nice and attractive. This will create a good ambience for eating.

There are some people who recommend cooking for a whole week at a time. But this is not advisable. The Fridge and other electronic items may be efficient in keeping and preserving the food. But it is confined to only some countries only. It also depends on the climate you are living in . In the countries having colder atmosphere the cooking of food for a week may be accepted. But not with the people living in the countries that have a very hot climate.
