As I enter my second semester of college, I would like to give advice to current high school seniors to help them transition into college. I am attending Tarleton State University and my first semester didn’t go as well as I would have wanted it to. Coming from a small 2A school, I had a little college readiness but it was not nearly enough to prepare me for what I was about to experience. Most of the high school classes that I had taken did not require me to study hardly at all and that really hurt me when I started my first semester of college.
When I started my first semester at Tarleton, the homework assigned was relatively easy and didn’t require much thought at all. Then the second week hit and the homework assignments started getting harder and more time consuming. I continued to complete and turn in my assignments but my work effort started to get sloppy and I was only completing my work to finish it, not for the highest possible grade. When the first test came around, I had no idea how to study for it because I was never properly taught how to develop a good technique for studying. So, I studied for the test the only way I knew how. I hardly ever got above a “C” on a test because I was studying all wrong. However, I continued to study the way I knew how. Then before I knew it, finals were only a week away and I studied non-stop. After finals, I had managed to pass all my classes but not with grades that I wanted. Overall, I learned a few things while experiencing my first semester of college.
1. Put in at least 40 hours a week studying( I never did this and that is why I struggled so much with tests)
2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help( there is always somewhere there willing to help)
And Finally
3. Don’t cut corners( If you do this your grades will eventually fall and it is very hard to bring them back up)
