12 WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT

Summer time. A time of fun in the sun and relaxing days lounging by the side of a pool or making sand castles at the beach with the family. Depending on your location, temperatures rise to unbearable degrees and staying cool can be a big challenge for most people especially without central air conditioning. Here you will find some ways to keep your house and yourself cooler in the summer heat.

Keeping Your House Cool

  • During the day, keep your curtains or drapes closed against the sun.

  • Keep ceiling fans running to help circulate the air to prevent the room from becoming “stuffy.”

  • Use oscillating fans in rooms without ceiling fans to keep the air in those rooms circulated. This will also help to keep you cooler when you are in the rooms.

  • When preparing meals, try to have foods that do not need to be cooked in the oven or on the stove as the oven can make the temperature rise in the house.

  • At night, put a box fan in a window to draw out the hot air and to bring in the cooler air (this was a common occurrence in my house growing up and it does help).

Keeping Yourself Cooler

  • Wear light colored clothing especially outside as light colors do not absorb the heat of the sun as dark colors do.

  • When you are outside, stay in the shade where it is a few degrees cooler than being in the sun.

  • Wear a sun hat to shade your face and neck from the sun to help stay a little bit cooler.

  • Take a dip in the pool. If you do not have a pool, you could pack up and go to the beach for the day and take advantage of the cool lake water and have fun with the family too.

  • If the above is not an option for you and your children, you can have a water balloon fight or run in the sprinkler with them.

  • Wash the car and have a water fight with your children. This kills two birds with one stone.

  • Have a squirt gun fight with your children. This may not get you too much cooler but you will have fun and forget about being hot.

These are a few of the ways in which you can cool down during the hot summer months. During these months, it is important to stay hydrated and to limit your activity during extreme heat. Make sure you wear sunscreen to prevent sun damage to you and your family’s skin. Stay cool, safe, and healthy. What are some of the ways in which you beat the heat during summer? Please share them here.

      • @oksummer Yes it does get HOT in Florida. I was down there in August a few years back and it was very HOT. I definitely loved the air and the pool at the house we rented.

    • We have blackout curtains for our windows. It helps immensely when you can insulate against the temperature, year round.

We use a slow cooker all year round, but I find it really helps in summer. I use that, an electric turkey roaster, and my toaster oven to avoid turning on the oven. It helps keep the house cooler. I can cook or bake pretty much everything, between those three appliances.

      • @ruby3881 I love using my slow cooker. So easy to throw everything in there and forget about it for a few hours. I wish I had counter space for a toaster oven so that I could use that for small things that I want to cook. I don't have blackout curtains but I still notice a difference when they are closed against the sun.

    • Fortunately it is rarely that we have heat wave here. I have a lawn on the terrace which helps cool the downstairs.
      Wearing cotton helps too.

    • That tip about the box fan in the window? We used to do that when I was a kid. Our house did not have air conditioning. But nowadays we don't feel comfortable sleeping with a fan in the window. Possible crime!
