Short stories can be fun, but sometimes, I find it more interesting to write longer ones. I think funny stories are good when they are short, because you get to the payoff or punch line quickly.
Where there is drama, I think a longer piece allows for more depth, more details.
I guess it really depends on my mood, how I feel my writing is flowing, and what I want the reader to take away from the story.
I do like short stories but some times the long ones are too interested and can never be ignored. Where the writer has created a very interesting introduction I go on reading everything.
