I was on a site once, which had 3 categories;  ‘staff writer’  which meant the person wrote well and their work was published immediately.   ‘writer’ wrote less well but only needed a quick scan, and ‘member’ whose work had to be read before publishing.

It is possible that outside of perhaps a plagiarism checker some folks can have their work pu…[Read more]

bestwriter wrote a new post, A Stray is no Different From a Pedigree 7 years, 12 months ago

A Pedigree breed is what we thought would be ideal to adopt as pets and we did move in that direction. We have had two of the pedigree pets and others a mix with a strain of pedigree in all of them. After all […]

    • Training with compassion does the trick When they know we love them they will do as we tell them

    • Well, the definition of stray and pedigree are entirely different. Pedigree has to do with a class of animal. For example, if the dog is purebred or of mix breed. A stray is an animal that has no place to call home regardless of its breed. I say this because we found a stray chihuahua once (we still have her). Just like children, all dogs have a unique personality about them. They are all different. I have three dogs and they all act differently. My pit bull is quieter and laid back, while the chihuahua likes to run around barking at everything. Their puppy (yes, the pit bull and the chihuahua mated) likes to run around and jump up and down and is the happiest puppy ever that loves to tear up furniture.

    • My first dog was a purebred miniature shetland sheep dog. She lived till the ripe old age of 16 years and never developed any diseases except for a little bit of arthritis. She was also a joy to have and to hold and to cherish. My second dog was a miniature American Eskimo, pure white with a brown nose and brown eyes. But being of the category spitz dog, she was quite the handful and needed constant training and watching. She would even jump the fence and that is what happened one day. She jumped the fence and even though I looked high and low for her, I never found her. My third dog was a mix German Shepherd and Husky. She also lived till about 17 years old.She was definitely a joy to hold, to love, to pet and cherish. I really enjoyed my walks with her especially in the winter. Being part Husky, she fared much better when it was cold. All dogs, whether purebred or stray or mixed breeds deserve a loving hand and home.

    • Well I believe that over-dependence on Google and Net is not very conducive.

      • Over dependence of course… but to read/hear and not have that normal human skepticism… and not check it out?

    • One of my brothers once told me something that I’ve never forgotten. He said: “You can read anything you want to read. But you don’t have to believe everything you read!” 🙂

Yes. Some people need to recognize that not everything that is published is true.

      • That’s the key issue. You read something, check it out. It’s the famous story of Douglas Spearman. He’s a minor actor. He learned he had AIDs by reading his Wiki entry. He contacted the owner and the item was removed. But he pondered, how many people reading the ‘authority’ Wikipedia believed it.

This one has the safe guards… firstly… they control the publication of your work, so slow it down so you can’t reach a redemption they can’t pay.

kaylar wrote a new post, It is the Sound of Your Speech 7 years, 12 months ago

As the BBC has abandoned the reporting of the News and migrated to what can only be politely described as ‘Blah Blah’,  one tends to have this ‘white noise’ as opposed to actual words.

    Blah Blah consists of […]

    • Interesting how you describe the BBC News reports. My husband would rather watch the BBC. He thinks it’s better than the American news. That’s not saying much for our news in America. I have learned to listen to all news report with only one ear and hope that helps filter out the garbage.

      • Those of us who live or grew up in the ex-Colonies, (or colonies) always listened to the BBC. Once they gave you the news you needed to know because they were there. There were no Jamaicans at the Press Conference at the Whitehouse, or on the streets in Hungary.

So we listen as we grew up learning to do. But, over the years, as the BBC has deteriorated, it is still better than the American news, but not by a mile.

    • If the speech is governed by language traditions and phonetic guidelines we can not find fault with their speech This is the most refined way of speaking a language.
After this stage the actual damage will start. They research, they make alterations, move and copy other words from others in order to move freely in the society. Hence the language will be distorted, twisted, mingled, minced, and what not many styles spring out as per one’s own choice which they want others to follow. Here comes the trouble. It is nothing but forcing the opinion and style on others. This is not good. Really not good.
I recollected the incident which happened in the university I have studied.
It was a farewell party to the final year M.Sc students. We arranged and organized the party.
A student from Satya Sai college came to the dais and has given a speech. The words he used, the expression he used everything was highly selected was a great effort he made throughout the night referring the dictionary. The effort he made could force some including our Professor to smile at the end of the speech. There was silent even after the completion of the speech as no one knows what he said and where did he stop.
When I talked from the same dias there was good response from all the students and other colleagues. There was a big applaud as everybody could understand what did I speak and how did I express my feelings towards my seniors and gave them a farewell message. I have not used even a single word which could not be comprehended by any of the spectators and another professor

The tone I used was in proportionate to the size of the Auditorium, the words were simple, there was no resounding, there was no resounding of voice or tone.

Always speak in a language with a clear tone, using simple words that can be understandable by others. It is only then the speech will carry any effect on others.
Otherwise, it is like speaking in Spanish before an Italian.

    • It is the way of talking in a kind of slangy/patwa which, for those who know it, means the chatters aren’t saying anything. It is just noise.

On November 8 the Prime Minister of India announced demonetization of currency notes with a denomination of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 Reports have it that it was a dictatorial announcement – not even the Finance M […]

    • This daring move by India’s PM made the news in the USA. I was dumfounded. I thought to myself “Is this going to work?”

So it wasn’t a good idea huh? Can’t say I’m surprised at the results. But when crime is bad and something has to be done, I can sort of understand the PM thinking “We need to do something drastic!” He must have been desparate!

    • Black money in cash is only 6% and rest is in gold, property and other instruments. And much of it is stacked in Switzerland.

This has put the middle class and poor who mostly deal in cash at great hardship.
What can they do with 2000 rupee notes? There are many other restrictions too

    • Not trying to tell the PM how to govern, but leaders need to think of the impact of their decisions on the masses before implementing solutions. Why should the middle class and poor always have to suffer? Life is hard enough for them without making an “everyday activity” a “criminal offense”. The thought of this just makes me angry and I’m not even the one being directly impacted. But I do empathize.

      • As they say ends do not justify means and here the means are disastrous. People are dying waiting in queues. With frauds in banks there is no currency left for the common man. But they being in the majority opposition is struggling to send the message.

    • Our politicians!! What can we say about them. And of course the rich and the corrupt always know about these things in advance. There are reportedly billions of dollars in Swiss banks that aredeposited by corrup[t third world leaders and flats, chateaus, diamonds, even castles. They will not be affected by these decisions. It is always the poor who suffer. Not a fan of Modi for many other reasons too. And you can bet there will be “incidents” that take away media’s and people’s attention away from these issues and focus on those instead.

    • You are so right. Just about 6% is in currency and this man is trying to arrest black money. Already new notes are in the hands of those who have converted their black money into white.
