Wildlife: Koala interesting details
Author | Posts |
The continent of Australia is a unique one in that it has some specific species related only to that particular continent and New Zealand, Tasmania and nearby islands. Here are a few interesting facts about Koala’s which are one of the species identified with that particular part of the the continent. Conservation is an important of retaining what is left of the species of whom many of which have already become extinct. The koala’s only eat eucalyptus leaves and it eats so many leaves, it smells like them too. There is a misconception that they are bears but they are not so and they are related to kangaroos and wombats. Spread across the continent of Australia their fur has a different texture and colour depending on the region A newborn koala is about three quarters of an inch long and weighs one fifth of an ounce. They communicate with each other by making a noise like a snore and then a belch known as a “bellow”. Unfortunately many of them are being hunted or killed and their parts are a part of the illegal trade. Due to this their population is on the decline and we may end up losing one more species. Over 2 million koalas were killed between 1908 and 1927. The sad part is today only about 8000 survive. We really do not know what is the present situation. Hope they are able to win the battle of survival with the help of the environmentalists and conservationists. There is always hope. Let us hope the koala survives. Please write your feedback with any additional information which you can add in the comments.
