Many universities were established in different parts of India which were subsequently destroyed by invasions and some become old and died a natural death. These were excellent centers of learning and people from different parts of the world used to come and learn different topics and acquire knowledge and return to their country. That way India had university education since ancient times and this setting up of universities was a new milestone in increasing the seat of learning during the reign of Ashoka.
Some of the famous universities which were set up during that time were in the Takshishila, Nalanda, Nagarjunakonda to name a few. Ashoka was also famous from building stupas and viharas in different parts of his kingdom. He wanted to provide good facilities to tourists, traders and travelers. He knew that having good facilities for caravans coming from abroad for the purpose of trade would increase revenue for the kingdom, earn goodwill for the empire and make travel and commuting safer and easier for travelers as they can rest safely at these places in the night and continue they onward journey once the sun rises.
The way to these places were also lined up with places like shops and markets where one could get food and water and other essentials thus local trade would also flourish along with trade from abroad. These facilities increased the traffic of people travelling too resulting in revenue accruing from various taxes to the kingdom. |

The short statured Ashoka was very ruthless and caused immense casualties during the battle of Kalinga. While he had got some opportunity to witness the victory in the battle suddenly he perceived the intensity and stubbornness with which the people of Kalinga were sacrificing their life for the sake of their land. This has turned and moved his mind and heart. Just this little thought has changed the entire scene. It turned his life into a mystic one. Then began the era of Buddhism which received his patronage. He not only became a Buddhist but also became its preacher. He sent embassies preaching the principles of Buddhism and missionaries under his son and daughter (Sanghamitra). Acharya Nagarjuna was a great Alchemist of all times who alone knows how to turn Iron into Gold. The education centres at Takshasila, Nalanda, and Amaravathi became world famous. Getting an admission in Nalanda was viewed prestigious during those days. |
