The hammerhead sharks are a group of sharks in the family Sphyrnidae, so named for the unusual and distinctive structure of their heads, which are flattened. The hammerhead shark (genus Syhyrna) has a wide head with the eyes at the margins. The teeth are triangular and serrated.They use their oddly shaped heads to improve their ability to find their prey. It uses its wide head to trap sting rays by pinning them to the ocean bed. Their sensory organs the ampullae of lorenzini help them to track their prey easily. They allow them to detect electrical fields created by prey animals. With their distinct hammer-shaped head, hammerhead sharks are easy to identify.
