He is the Hindu Sun God who is worshiped in the early hours of dawn by devout Hindus as a prime ritual. He is hailed by 108 names among them some of the known and familiar ones are Aditya, Bhaskara, Bhanu deva, Arka, Pushan, Ravi among the many others. Lord Surya is one of the Navagrahas who heavily influences the life on the earth by his presence and also those of the other planets of the solar system. Imagine a state where there is no sunlight for many months and years and think of the consequences then we will be able to better appreciate the presence and blessings of Lord Surya which we receive daily.

If He is not there then life will cease to exist and there will be no seasonal changes and rainfall. Thus he plays a very important role in feeding  and sustaining of all life forms on earth by giving them energy to  live on earth. He is the star in the solar system which is the nearest to the earth and is the biggest one near us. He has three consorts Sangya, Ragyi and Prabha. His sons are the Ashwini twins who are the physicians of the Gods,  Shani Deva (Saturn) and the Lord of Death and Dharma Yama and his twin sister Yami.

Lord Shri. Rama took incarnation in the Surya vansha. On the day of Makara Sankranti Lord Surya visits His son Lord Shani Bhagvan. It is a sun centric festival celebrated all over India and coincides with the end of the harvesting season and a time for rejoicing for the grace shown by the Lord by giving a bountiful crop, rain and a good climate all year through as he influences the weather conditions.

Astrologers believe that it is a festival symbolizing not only change in the axis, seasons but also the beginning of a new cycle that is from Dakshinayam to Uttarayanam. On this day the Lord Surya leaves one rashi to meet the next. Sakkarai Pongal is made on this day in Tamil Nadu. It is a pot consisting of rice in which jaggery or sugar is added when the rice boils and overflows from the pot they chant pongal o pongal, which means boiling and rising out of the pot after getting cooked. The same festival is celebrated in different varied and colorful for ways all over the country. It is an all India festival and some communities also have their New Year on this day.

The lord is also called by other names like Dinakar, Bhaskara, Aditya and many other names in praise of Him. Suryanamaskar is done daily, and on this day with Surya Ashtotaram and Aditya Hridayam is also chanted with mantras. Fasting is done by some while feasting is also done by many after offering the cooked food to the Lord as he is the one providing the crop and energy and is the driving force. Prasad is distributed to one and all. There are innumerable variety of dishes cooked by devotees all over India.

Surya Namaskara or Sun Salutation is a yoga  warm up routine. After which the yogi performs all the asanas in a particular order. If one performs Surya Namaskar regularly he is rid of many of the ailments which we humans tend to develop over a period of time as we grow from the time of birth.

It is a regular discipline which when performed daily helps in relaxing  the muscles, heart, body, nerves, breathing, mind, flow of blood improves in the body leading to  the body and mind to be calm and the soul to feel at ease with the universe and helps in clarity of thinking leading to spiritual growth.

So it is incumbent on Hindus all over the world to be grateful to Lord Surya not only on Makara Sankranti but all year through and seek his blessings for the benefit of the world as the whole world is one family. That is what the Hindu religion teaches us.

Om Sri Surya Devaya Namaha.
