The worlds began to tremble and sway under the impact of terror, when Kali destroyed the demons and began a terrific dance. At the request of all the gods, Shiva lay like a corpse among the slain demons in order to stop Maa Kali. When Kali eventually stepped upon Shiva, she realized she was trampling and hurting her husband and bit her tongue in shame.

The Shiv tattava (Divine Consciousness as Shiva) is inactive, while the Shakti tattava (Divine Energy as Kali) is active. Shiva and Kali represent Brahman, the Absolute pure consciousness which is beyond all names, forms and activities. Kali represents the potential and manifested energy responsible for all names, forms and activities. She is his Shakti, or creative power, and is seen as the substance behind the entire content of all consciousness. She can never exist apart from Shiva, as Shiva remains a mere corpse without Shakti.

All the matter/energy of the universe, is not distinct from Shiva, or Brahman, but is rather the dynamic power of Brahman. Hence, Kali is Para Brahman in the feminine and dynamic aspect while Shiva is the male aspect and static. She stands as the absolute basis for all life, energy and beneath her feet lies, Shiva, a metaphor for mass, which cannot retain its form without energy.Shiva absorbed Shakti (energy), hence became Shava (corpse) to Shiva.

To remove darkness, light has to be lit. Shiva, whose color is white, is the symbolism of absolute pure consciousness, the light of knowledge. Kali converted Shava to Shiva, from passive energy to active energy. Shiva, then converted Kali (black, dark) to Gauri (fair complexion), symbolizing the conversion of the wild nature to civilized.

Whenever, Shiva becomes Shava and not responding Gauri. Gauri becomes Kali and dance on top of Shiva. Beneath the wild nature the possibility of civilization is hidden. Similarly, veneer the civilization, wild nature is hidden.

Goddess KALI is one of the vital part of NAVDURGA. She is first mentioned in hindu tradition as an exclusive Goddess around 600 CE.

Two demons CHANDA and MUNDA attacked Goddes DURGA. At that time DURGA responded with such anger that her face turns dark and  that very moment KALI appered out of her her forehead and killed those demons.

The name of ‘KALI’ means ‘KALA’  or ‘force of time’.  There were neither creation nor the universe ….was only darkness. Everything was created from that darkness. The dark appearance of KALI is the symbol of that darkness from which everything was created.

She is fearful in the battlefield , she is tremendous, destructive,….. she is “SHAKTI OF SHIVA”.

Again she is “PARVATI OF BHOLANATH”, she is “MOTHER”. She is “DARK”, “EMPTY” and “AADI”, she is “NATURE”…free from all “ILLUSION OF CIVILIZATION” … she is “THE TRUTH”, and “PURITY”. She is “MOKSH” by being the counter part of SHIVA,…”THE DESTROYER/TRANSFORMER”

The whole creation rises out of KALI, grows upon her and melts with with her.

Great interpretation of the Goddess Kali. The Goddess also inspires us to remove all our avagunas or negative traits and imbibe the sadgunas or positive traits in every human being. She helps her devotees to remove dark aspects of their lives and fill their lives with brightness of knowledge and wisdom which guide and help all humans to think and  decide the right and the wrongs of life. And keep the tendency of not straying away from the path of dharma.

The form of the Goddess even though She looks scary is a divine one. Which is the reason why we see her form and image with millions of devotees around the world. She inspires devotees to do many things which are positive in their outlook thus cleanse themselves and rid them of all things which should not be present in a individual who possess knowledge and wisdom.

There are innumerable festivals which are held in India and other parts of the world by the devotees. All these are nothing but different ways of remembering Her and cleansing oneself of all their sins. One among the many famous devotees of Goddess Kali is Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Jai Maa Kali.
