Ram Lila, the enactment of the story of Lord Rama is believed to have been started by great Saint Tulsidas. The Ramcharitmanas, written by him forms the basis of Ram Lila performances. In some places, Ram Lila is associated with Vijayadashmi celebrations in late September and early October and also with Rama Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama..Ram Lila, till today, is presented as a cycle-play with the story varying from 7 to 31 days. The Ram Lila performance evokes a festive atmosphere and enables observance of religious rites. It is also rich in performance of crafts such as costume jewellery, masks, headgear, make-up and decoration. The four main Ram Lila styles are: the pantomimic style with a predominance of jhankis or tableaux pageants; the dialogue-based style with multi-local staging; the operative style which draws its musical elements from the folk operas of the region and the stage performance staged by professional troupes called `mandalis’.Ayodhya is popular for mandali Ram Lila. The performance is dialogue-based and presented on a platform stage. High standard of performance is complemented by songs and kathak dances and eye-catching décor. Ayodhya plays host to the Ram Navmi Festival in the month of April. Thousands of worshippers gather to venerate the Lord at Kanak Bhawan. Shravan Jhula Mela celebrates the playful spirit of the deities. On the third day of the second half of Shravan, images of the deities (specially of Rama, Lakshman and Sita) are placed in swings in the temples. They are also taken to Mani Parvat, where the idols are made to swing from the branches of the trees. Later the deities are brought back to temples. The mela lasts till the end of the month of Shravana. Ayodhya is perhaps the most noted place in the northern India where parikramas are undertaken by Hindu Pilgrims. These are circumambulations of important religious places and are of varying duration, shortest being the Antargrahi Parikrama’ which has to be completed within a day. After taking a dip in the Saryu, the devotee commences the parikarma from the Nageshwarnath temple and passes through Rama Ghat, Sita Kund, Maniparvata and Brahma Kund, finally terminating at Kanak Bhawan. Then there is the Panchkoshi Parikrama circuit of 10 miles, which touches Chakratirtha, Nayaghat, Ramghat, Saryubagh, Holkar-ka-pura, Dashrathkund, Jogiana, Ranopali, Jalpa Nala and Mahtabagh. On the way the people pay homage to deities in the shrines which are situated on the route. The ‘Chaturdashkoshi Parikrama’ constitutes a circular journey of 28 miles made once a year on the occasion of Akshainaumi, which is completed within 24 hours.

LESSONS ONE CAN IMBIBE FROM RAMAYANA IN LIFE
Ramayana is a epic which teaches many things to many people. While one can ask what can one learn from Ramayana. Here are some answers which come to ones mind immediately. It teaches a husband has to fight against all odds and go and protect his better half from the hands of problematic characters like Ravana. One can learn how a brothers love should be. How a younger brother should serve his elder one by making sacrifices like how Lakshmana did and how the love should be reciprocated in return in word and deed by the elder brother.
It shows how a younger brother of God Rama, Bharata, who got the throne refuses to ascend the throne and lives below the ground as the elder brother God Rama is sent for a 14 year exile and waits for his return protecting the kingdom on his behalf. It shows how the monkey God Hanuman goes all out to help God Rama with true devotion and friendship. It also teaches how even though he is a would be king God Rama obeys his step mother Kaikeyi as he would his own mother and goes to the forests and lives life as an ordinary human. It shows the strong bonding between the four brothers God Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, Shatrugna.
Ramayana teaches one not to believe something which does not exist and fall into the trap of maya as how Goddess Sita did on seeing the Asura Maricha in the form of a golden deer. It also teaches a couple how to be together during all times good or bad like how God Rama and Sita stood for each other. It teaches how one should not fall for someone else wife as how Ravana did and that proved to be his undoing. It teaches one howsoever he may be strong and mighty like Ravana one should always be humble and not try to show an ego or attitude and put down others and value women with respect. It shows how a king in this case God Rama, should always be available for the service of the people of his kingdom and those who are being troubled, tormented or are suffering.
It also teaches one how one should not become downcast on facing problems and challenges in life as one has learn to face all situations in life with a smile. Which many of us in the present era often fail to do. There are many more innumerable things which have not been discussed here and the same will be discussed at a later date. Here the most important things one can observe are in the field of human relationships of different kinds.
The amount of respect and value which has to be given to each relationship and how unique each and every relationship in life is. The management lessons one can learn are not to fight for kingdom which will result in death and destruction. How a king is to maintain relationships with ones subjects. How one should behave in life with a smile despite all odds and how to keep all happy despite the individual providing happiness and succor (here God Rama) suffering innumerable hardships. These are some of the invaluable lessons one can learn. |
